** CORONAVIRUS & PETS: The Facts **

Here at SASH we know that pet lovers everywhere are asking questions about Coronavirus/COVID-19. We want to ensure that you all have access to the current facts and essential information to help you care for your beloved pets. At this stage there is NO evidence that pets can play a role in the spread of this human disease, or that they can become sick.

As you all may have read, there has been a single case in China of a Pomeranian owned by a SARS-COV-2 positive patient that tested weakly positive for the presence of the virus. This dog is in isolation and has never shown signs of disease caused by COVID-19.

For now, it is very important to remember that while all pet owners should always use good hygiene practices, including hand hygiene before and after handling animals as well as their food, we do not believe there is reason for pet owners to be otherwise concerned.

As recommended by the AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) pet owners who may be infected with the virus or who are voluntarily isolating because of risk of infection, are advised to keep their pets with them, but minimise handling as a precautionary measure until more information is known about the virus and routes of transmission. At no stage should pet owners be taking measures that may compromise the welfare of their pets.
