In defence of ‘And Just Like That’

Wow, have the knives been out for the ‘S*x and the City’ reboot ‘And Just Like That’, which just wound up.

From simple criticism to an almost vicious line of vitriol, the haters have been loud and proud. And yet, almost all of them watched every episode. Every single episode. And this is a show that dropped one episode a week.

We could reason that the original six seasons of S*x and the City, and possibly the first movie, have engendered such passionate love for the characters among fans that there was no way the new series could possibly live up to expectations.

A colleague at work, who is in her thirties, was adamant she was only interested in seeing Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda in their 30s. She found watching what three of the four were going through in their 50s boring and irrelevant. Fair enough. But she watched every episode.

Writing in the Atlantic, Sophie Gilbert lamented the abrupt change in Miranda’s character. “Miranda was always supposed to be the rational person’s ‘S*x and the City’ character….’And Just Like That’, though, has presented a different version of Miranda. How to put it? She’s, well…awful?’ But she watched every episode.

I’ve listened to two podcasts tearing the show apart, yet presenting a new recording after each ‘And Just Like That’ episode. Once again, they watched every episode.

I don’t believe this is your classic hate-watching. That, to me, means watching something you know will be abysmal, simply to compete in posting the pithiest tweet. People were watching because they care.

Look, it wasn’t perfect. As fans were quick to point out, if Carrie is on a podcast discussing her worst break-ups, and Berger’s post-it note doesn’t get a mention, what world are we living in? There were clunky and cringey parts, as the show shed its previous all-white world. I mourn the Stanford Blatch storyline we never got to see because we lost the wonderful actor Willie Garson to cancer. And Cynthia Nixon’s wigs kept changing. They were 50 shades of grey.

To this viewer though, there were storylines and parts that resonated strongly. I haven’t seen another show, movie or series, portraying a woman my age, who like me, is a widow. And while our journeys did differ (certainly my late husband did not leave a million dollars to someone else) there were moments where I was nodding and sobbing at the same time. I still wear my wedding ring, and I identified with Carrie’s indecision about whether to continue wearing hers. The numbness, the sudden onset of episodes of grief, the desire to just walk and walk, the search for signs. These are all very real to me.

I also believed the explanation of Samantha’s absence was plausible. Long-term, incredibly close friendships can and do shatter. Her text messages felt genuine. Although I loved commentator Brodie Lancaster’s alternate ending, which ‘had Samantha show up on the bridge, and SJP says in that breathy Carrie voice, “You came!” Then OBVIOUSLY Kim Cattrall is all, “Honey, I always do.”’

In an interview with the New York Times, Elisa Zuritsky, a writer on the series, compared ‘And Just Like That’ to a band putting out a new album after many, many years. She said the ‘initial reaction is often: “Wait, what about my favourite song? Wait, this sounds different!” It can be uncomfortable.’ But it’s unlikely that new album would achieve anywhere near the level of engagement this series has.

Of all the commentary on social media, one theme seemed to have fans and critics united. That is the treatment of Steve. The hashtag trended. In the podcast ‘And Just Like That…The Writers Room’ it was revealed that ‘Team Steve’ and ‘Team Miranda’ badges were distributed to cast and crew during filming, and it was the ‘Team Steve’ badges that were snapped up. Cynthia Nixon even posted a picture of herself wearing one on Instagram.

I would bet money that HBOMax will green light a second series of ‘And Just Like That’ And when that happens fans, critics and commentators will metaphorically be wearing their ‘Team S*x and the City’ or ‘Team And Just Like That’ badges. But they’ll be watching.
