Dr .schnell is a researcher, storyteller and National Geographic Explorer. Her research explores the intelligence of marine animals, mainly focusing on cuttlefish and octopus. As the Lead Storyteller and Producer of Secrets of the Octopus ( /) Schnell takes us on a deep dive into the world of these mesmerizing creatures, offering a unique perspective that not only changes how we view octopuses but also deepens our connection with the entire ocean and its myriad inhabitants. Schnell’s work encourages new understandings of intelligent life, reshapes how we think about diverse animal minds, and ultimately influences the way we treat animals.

“Our oceans need healing, they cover over 70% of our planet and yet there are converging crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and welfare risks to marine animals,” says Schnell. “But in order to heal our oceans we need to first be able to empathise with it. How do we empathise with a huge mass of water? We need to think about, and connect with, the critters it supports. The creatures of the sea, from the smallest fish to the largest whales are not so different from us. Many are vulnerable, possess intelligence, and have the capacity to experience emotions. Recognizing these traits helps dissolve the “otherness” of the ocean, reminding us of our shared vulnerability and interconnection.”

Layering neutral tones is an airtight way of looking good. Nature has perfected this hack, with muted sandy browns, sea blues with hints of green in the softness of first light on the Australian shoreline.

Together, these colours subtly invite us to explore.

Introducing the Taruga. A unisex insulated jacket, with slightly different cuts for men and women, pending your choice of fit.

We like to think of the Taruga as a modular piece. The fully removable hood allows the jacket to be worn more like an aviation-style fit. If you prefer the hood sans faux fur, the trim is detachable for a simpler aesthetic.

Kitted out with utility pockets at the front, side and inside the jacket, the Taruga has some serious storage.

The National Geographic logo badge is detachable to reveal a subtle black-on-black logo treatment. Style your way. It’s totally modular. Totally up to you.

In Conversation with Valerie Taylor OAM

“Darling,” Valerie starts to say, “I've had my life, and I've had the best lot of anybody I know. I have lived through the best time that's ever been on this planet.” And she’s right. Valerie and her husband Ron travelled the world over, capturing the most beautiful marine life and seascapes. In 2010 Valerie became a member of the Order of Australia for her work in conserving marine animals and their habitats. At 88 years old, she is still advocating for the conservation of our oceans and the marine life that inhabit them.

Featuring as the face of our launch campaign for National Geographic Wear, Valerie embodies what it means to be a pioneering voice and creative in the world of conservation. We spoke to her about her journey, barely scraping the surface of her wonderous and adventure-filled life.

National Geographic Wear Flagship Stores have launched in Melbourne Central and Westfield Chatswood. As a brand that champions innovation and education in our storytelling, we also apply these ideas practically. Our retail stores have been designed to be practical and modular; taking on the form of a gallery space, able to adapt seasonally to new ideas using the same core fixtures. Large digital screens span the back wall and ceiling with immersive locally filmed nature and seascapes illuminating the stores.

The QVB Sydney Pop-up is a conceptual space that emanates our human urge to explore. To travel. With design elements found in aircraft hangars, the space features a curated collection of pieces for the urban explorer.

All our spaces feature the iconic National Geographic yellow portal that has been developed as a 3D printed object with the School of Design team at RMIT University, Melbourne. Developed from a bio-based plastic and entirely compostable, the unique design process of the portal demonstrates the power of science and research and how it can contribute to a more progressive and sustainable future. Each portal with a unique pattern formed by an algorithm that maps the biodiversity of the area in which it sits.

Our BLUEWAVE® hangers created with Arch & Hook are made from 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic, marine plastic and recycled post-consumer plastic, collected predominantly from four of the most polluting rivers in the world. At the end of their lifespan, BLUEWAVE® hangers can be recycled to remake new hangers, making them completely circular.

Come and explore our curated range of insulated puffer jackets, graphic prints, tailored track pants and accessories, all with that elevated adventure energy.

Visit us in-store this weekend at our Melbourne Central and Westfield Chatswood stores, or our Sydney Pop-Up in the Queen Victoria Building.

World Environment Day 2023

This World Environment Day focuses on the impact of plastics on the planet and the people and businesses who are driving solutions around this. Over 400million tonnes of plastic is produced every year and less than 10% is recycled. The worlds consumed plastic ends up in our lakes, rivers, and seas. The solution to this problem: science and innovation.

World Environment Day 2023 asks that people and businesses not only act against plastic pollution but share innovative ways of working with this material. This will help to create healthier practices for the environment and inspire others.

One of the organisations we have worked with at National Geographic Store is Arch & Hook, adopting their BLUEWAVE® technology for our retail store hangers. BLUEWAVE® hangers are made from 100% recycled ocean bound plastic, marine plastic and recycled post-consumer plastic, collected predominantly from four of the most polluting rivers in the world. At the end of their lifespan BLUEWAVE® hangers can be recycled to make new hangers, meaning they are completely circular.

It’s practices like these that will make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution.

Follow for more stories and solutions this World Environment Day.
