Australia is experiencing a temporary surge in net overseas migration following the pandemic, mainly due to the return of overseas students, skilled temporary visa holders, and working holidaymakers, with a forecast of 400,000 migrants in 2022-23. The Minister for Home Affairs, Clare O'Neil, announced an increase in the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) to $70,000 from July 1, 2023, and expanded pathways to permanent residence for employer-sponsored temporary skilled visa holders after two years of employment, regardless of occupation.
