This week in 5/6 Bradshaw we have celebrated NAIDOC week with a range of activities across the curriculum learning areas. We have sat around a fire and sampled damper, looked at landforms, astronomy and hunting through Dreaming stories such as The Three Sisters, Emu in the Sky and Needwonnee Melaleuca. We created our own story of symbols and simulated hunting training.

This term in 3-4 Bardelmeyer we have been focussing on collecting and presenting data. We all created a question and then went and asked the other 3-4 classes. Once we collected our data, we created a bar graph to show our findings. Did you know that the favourite chocolate bar in 3-4 is a KitKat. We also found that their favourite pet is a dog.

Each week Prep/1 Judges have Music with Miss Dwyer. They learn lots of things to do with music such as rhythms, beats and all about different kinds of instruments. As part of their learning, they had the opportunity to listen to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Derwent Valley Concert Band.
The students then created their own orchestra back in the classroom with Ms Judges using drums, triangles and castanets. They practiced so much that they decided to perform in the STAR Assembly. They were wonderful!!
They also used their knowledge to draw pictures of their favourite instruments. Some of the instruments they chose to draw were the triangle, trumpet, French horn, trombone, drums, flute, cow bell, xylophone and violin.

This week in Kinder we are celebrating NAIDOC week. We begin every morning with our Acknowledgement of Country. The students have recently mastered the words and actions with independence. We read the Aboriginal Story ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours,’ written by Mary Albert. According to the Dreaming, all birds were once black. The students chose a bird and used paint to illustrate their own versions of how the birds looked, when they got their colours. This morning, we met Trish, from NITA Education. Trish is a Tasmanian Aboriginal person, who shared stories with us about the land and the animals that live on it. She had us all sounding like a class full of turbo chooks. She gave the students clay to make a platypus. We all very much enjoyed our time with Trish.

On Monday students from Kinder up to Grade 4 were treated to a musical performance from the Derwent Valley Concert Band (please link their page). Students were played a piece and were shown the different instruments the band were using during the performance. Afterwards, all 3/4 classes were given the opportunity to try out different instruments from flutes all the way to the Euphonium and asked questions about the band and the instruments. This was a great day had by all; we are certainly fortunate to have such a great community band here in New Norfolk!

This term our writing focus in 5/6 O has been information texts. In preparation for our assessment on writing a biography, our class has practiced finding relevant information about a famous person.

We created PowerPoints with 5 clues included and our classmates had to guess who the famous person was. We have had a lot of fun researching and guessing as a class!

“Grade 5/6 classes have been focusing on singing in music this term. It has been great to see the engagement and general excitedness from students coming to music and building their confidence in singing. Here are Photos from 5/6 Luttrell’s class performing Karaoke. Parker Sleep blessing us with his beautiful voice, and Layla Morse and Amber McLean leading the whole class in singing Riptide by Vance Joy.”

In 3-4 Bardelmeyer, Miss Duggan has been teaching us about the 3 states of matter. We have learnt that an object can either be a solid, liquid or gas. Today we did an experiment to see what state oobleck is. We found that when we apply pressure it is a solid, but when the pressure is removed, it becomes a liquid. This is called a non-Newtonian liquid. We found this very interesting.

This amazing Aboriginal artwork hangs in our school office. Below is the information written on the plaque below the painting.

Keepers of the Land: Ros Langford
The painting depicts how important the land and the caring of it is to Aboriginal people.
The centre circle of white star dotting represents the spiritual force the heavenly bodies have for Aboriginal people.
The second and third outer circles represent spiritual beings who have always cared for this land.
The nine triangles, represent the nine homelands, with the blue surround representing the sea around Tasmania.
The inner symbols within the triangles represent Tasmanian Aboriginal Man (Palawa).
The various dotting surrounding the main part of the of the painting represents the land and its people.
The artist’s interpretation of the painting “Keepers of the Land” is that the Aboriginal people belong to the earth and that if it is cared for it will provide and care for us in return.
The artist wishes all people to appreciate and care for this beautiful land.

This week the Kinder students met a real-life fire fighter, Drew. He spoke to the students about fire safety, the number to call in case of an emergency and dressed in his full uniform. The children acknowledged while there are many layers and pieces of equipment they need to wear, (which can look a little scary)- they are people we can trust to help us in an emergency.
Drew gave us some dress ups to borrow and a book to read.

This week is Reconciliation Week, and Prep Hammer have been learning about how people have the power to stand together when they see things are unfair for others and bring positive change. Here is our display. Our hands represent standing together and the colours used are those of the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag.

In 5/6 Bradshaw, we have been building our understanding of literal and inferred meanings in an imaginative text. In doing this, we are using comprehension strategies such as visualising, predicting, connecting and summarising. Together, these create a deeper understanding of the text and can be applied to other books we read.
