The cost of a gym membership can sometimes be more than its true value. And with the rise of online workouts from your favorite studios and trainers, it's easier-and cheaper-than ever to build endurance and strength from the comfort of your own home.

Here's how to set up a home gym you'll actually want to workout in.

1. FIND THE RIGHT SPACE: Before you start anything, you'll want to decide where to set up your home gym. At the very least, the space should have enough room for a yoga mat, which is all the space you'll need to stretch and do core exercises.

A HIIT workout might need more space and a solid (but not-too-hard) surface to jump around on, while a yoga or Pilates workout needs a little more space than a yoga mat. A heavy lifting regimen featuring all the bells and whistles will likely require a whole room of its own.

An outdoor space like a roomy back porch or patio can work if your local climate and living situation permits it. And if you have a spare bedroom, empty office, or vacant garage that's begging to be used, you've hit the home gym jackpot.

2. STOCK YOUR HOME GYM: You don't need a tonne of equipment to make your home gym an effective place to workout. A few good quality pieces of cardio and strength equipment are all you need. We recommend one of our foldable treadmills or rowers if you’re dealing with a smaller space. Or, if space permits, you can add in an exercise bike or cross trainer for extra benefits. For strength, kettlebells and medicine balls are highly effective and space-saving, as are dumbbells.

3. RECOVERY: Recovery equipment is essential for any home gym. A yoga mat and foam roller are all you need to knead out those sore muscles.

Remember, you don't have to buy everything for your home gym all at once. Start with a few key pieces and then gradually build up from there.
