Remembering Elizabeth
From my own personal collection of Samplers.
Queen Elizabeth 11 was crowned on 2 June 1953, & was the first Coronation to be televised.
The Queen & the Duke of Edinburgh were driven from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach pulled by eight grey gelding horses: Cunningham, Tovey, Noah, Tedder, Eisenhower, Snow White, Tipperary & McCreery.
#1953
Remembering Caroline.
I discovered recently that my Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth Bowles (B 1916) worked at The Imperial Hotel in Warwick in 1935.
I’m sure her hand would have grabbed the balastrade on her way up the staircase to her room. Extraordinary to think almost 90 years ago, she would have been here in this very same spot.
If only walls could talk….
The tiny photo is my most precious picture of her as a teenager on the dairy farm she was raised outside Warwick.
She helped hand milk the herd before & after school.
I’m sure it would have been so exciting for her to have a job in a grand hotel in the big smoke.

The Templin Life
Historical village of Wonder
We like ours old fashioned.
Fabulous country find, Depression era folk art Child’s pedal locomotive.
Based on the “Cheltenham Flyer” the World’s fastest steam era train of the early 1930s.
Find it & much more at The Emporium by .revival
Straight out of a Grimm fairy tale….
The spooky Gostwyck Chapel in Captain Thunderbolt’s territory & his final resting place in Uralla’s historical Cemetery.
We all need a little Folk culture in our lives.
The Armidale Folk Museum housed in an 1863 building is a joy to see.
Displays of early maps of the burgeoning Armidale township, rustic Children’s toys, to a shop counter with rows of every imaginable canned food.
I particularly loved the WW1 badge collection sewn onto carry bags for fundraising, & Ellen’s Alphabet Sampler from 1827.
But my heartfelt favourite was the wooden grave marker. Before the coming of the railway there was a shortage of suitable stone & stone masons thus necessitating the use of wood for head stones.
Sacred to the memory of Obed Roan
Who departed this life 30th April 1866
In the 15th year of his age.
Our life is ever on the wing
And death is ever nigh
The moment when our lives begin
We all begin to die.
The beauty continues…….
The original old Saumarez homestead built in the 1860s, & the many outbuildings including stables, tack room, dairy shed, creamery, meat hanging room, engine room, pioneer store, hay sheds, & glass house.
As well as numerous vegetable & picking gardens, & a heritage rose garden with 600 plants.
Not to mention the latest technology, with the 1906 house lit up by its own acetylene gas plant!
Edwardian beauty
The extraordinary Saumarez homestead and farm buildings dating back to the 1830s.
An amazing glimpse into the workings of a graziers property in the early settlement of Armidale in country NSW.
The double storey mansion completed in 1906 was frozen in time when the last remaining daughter Miss Elsie, died in 1981 at age 97, leaving the house & contents almost unchanged from the early 20th century.
What a privilege for & I to enter this time capsule, wander its halls, & imagine the family living out their whole lives in a house that remains with so many stories yet to tell.
The Mackintosh Rose 🌹
Beautiful Leadlight panels with a lovely rose motif synonymous with the Art Nouveau style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Meet Lizzie and Mikey, the dynamic duo behind Hobohemia and The Urban Lumberjack!
Antique Purses to Axes and everything in between. Â
Our Love for the old is strongly connected to the history of the object, and the delight in its uncovering. 1940s or older is our thing, with a focus on the Depression Era and rustic items.
We both come from an advertising background, Lizzie the organiser and Mikey the Photographer, and once married our collecting genes collided and became central to our lives together.
We dipped our toes into selling at Vintage fairs for a few  years and finally put our full time Hobohemia roots down in 2011, in a little shop on Given Tce, Paddington.
From there it wasn't long till we made the move to Empire Revival, which has provided a fantastic community of like minded collectors, and is an absolute pleasure to sell from.
In 2021 Hobohemia and The Urban Lumberjack Tool Co. joined forces in Empire Revival, bringing antique tools and mantiques to the masses.
We've attended Antique Purse Conventions in New York, and ferreted about 50 acres of fields of old Americana in Brimfield Massachusetts USA. Oh Lordy!
We love the hunt, be it in ancient dump sites, country barns, swap meets, Nana's back sewing room or even a few possible serial killer's sheds!
If an object has a story to tell then we're interested, and our passion is to bring it to light for other collectors to share, and continue its journey.
The “Wonder Store” that is The Emporium by Empire Revival has arrived!
& are thrilled to extend our .revival presence in this extraordinary new venture by Suzy & Greg in the lovely country town of Kalbar.
Just an hour from Brisbane, there’s plenty to see, do & eat!

Nothing like home grown flowers, they bring the sweetest joy & delight, from my dear sister’s garden 💗
A wonderful, laughter filled day spent with our extended family in a 100 year old Methodist Chapel.
No longer operating as a Church it was a delightful place to enjoy our Xmas celebrations under the stained glass windows.
Grumpy Santa even turned up!
Wishing you all the happiest of Christmas days from the Hobo & Urban Lumberjack!
Thank you for your support, care & friendships, here’s to a positive, kind & joyful year ahead.

Always ready to share his fried chicken, prepares my buffet breakfast @ 5am, and his belly is the best to rest on!
Happy Fathers Day to all the loving & supportive Dads.
Missing our country escape…..
I’m not generally a pub girl, but the Crown Hotel at Maryvale, was a delight. Built in 1913, it services the small town as well as numerous grey nomads, & family reunions.
My Grandmother Caroline (born in 1916) would attend country dances at the Maryvale Hall in the early 1930s.
It’s a profound feeling when you realise you’re retracing past footprints.
Did her brothers dare her to go to the bar and order a quick shandy? What did she see & feel? Am I seeing the same street scape, the same old gum trees.
Oh to go back in time to see Caroline swing dancing in her cotton dress, while the local band plays their best Glen Miller tunes.
It’s a still, slow life in the country…..
