Today, Saturday 25 May, marks World Thyroid Day. A healthy thyroid and balanced thyroid hormone levels are crucial for overall wellbeing and body function. The Australian Thyroid Foundation estimates that over 1 million Australians may have undiagnosed thyroid disorders, which can be challenging to identify due to symptoms overlapping with other medical conditions.

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, responsible for producing hormones that regulate metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate. Imbalances in these hormones can lead to conditions like hypothyroidism, where the thyroid produces too little thyroxine and triiodothyronine. This condition can result from factors like inflammation, iodine deficiency, or autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, leading to symptoms such as brain fog, hair loss, constipation, and high blood pressure.

If you're experiencing symptoms or have a family history of thyroid or autoimmune diseases, consult your GP for an evaluation.
