Before Australiaโs Taekwondo stars trade blows at the upcoming World Championships, they must each face a formidable opponent โ the weighing scales.
Before fight day, Taekwondo athletes face a long, and sometimes challenging journey, to ensure that they make their respective weight divisions.
We caught up with Erica Stephens, a member of Australian Taekwondoโs Shadow Team for the 2004 Athens Olympics, to talk about safe weight cutting. Erica has obtained a range of qualifications in nutrition and dietetics and assists recreational and professional athletes from up to 40 sports (including Taekwondo) with performance nutrition advice.

A few drawbacks and question marks for me in taking the conclusion of the article and running with it in real life:
1. The majority of articles included were on grappling combat sports (can we apply to TKD??)
2. The majority of the participants in the studies included were male (can we apply to females??)
3. The caffeine dose across the studies included was rather large (we may see the same outcomes at lower doses but not enough people have looked at this)

Fight day nutrition timeline! It certainly helps to think through your nutrition before fight day. What do you like to eat? What feels comfortable in your stomach? How much and what food will you pack? When will you eat around your fights? The timeline provided is just an example.
