Solomon Islands Rural Health Project

Solomon Islands Rural Health Project

Sponsor a Youth in the Solomon Islands supports Nurse Training at Solomon Islands National University and High School Education at St. Josephs at Tenaru.

THE ECONOMIC SITUATION in the Solomon Islands makes access to education one of the most significant issues facing young people in the Solomon Islands. With over 80 percent of the population dependent on obtaining their livelihood from subsistence farming and fresh produce marketing, many have lost their limited access to cash income with the recent civil tension and break down of economic activity

Thanks to all the generous people who have donated to the Solomon Islands Rural Health Project. There has been huge progress at the Hauhui Clinic on Malaita. New roof, new windows, new paint and timber repairs. We still need to update the medical equipment and purchase a seaworthy boat to transport serious ill sick patients to the nearest hospital, 3 hours boat ride away.

Support Rural Health in the Solomon Islands. Access to quality health care in rural and remote Solomon Islands is difficult and hazardous.

Community‐run health clinics receive little or no assistance from the Solomon Island’s government. Some are run down and greatly in need of refurbishment including severely rusted roofs which need replacement, repainting inside and out, replacement of windows, mosquito mesh on windows, new tanks for drinking water and replacement of their toilet block. Clinics are also very poorly equipped with an urgent need for updating medical equipment, such as BP machine, pulse oximeter, blood glucose monitor, infrared thermometer
etc., plus the provision of beds and trolleys.

Many communities are very remote and have no serviceable roads so that, in the event of a health emergency, they must rely on boat travel to get the help they need. Hospitals can be several hours away by sea and the lives of both nurse and patient are put at risk when they are forced to use borrowed boats which are not regularly serviced nor seaworthy. In addition, sometimes boats simply aren’t available.

We are looking to support brave, solo nurses who serve in community‐run clinics so if you would like to help, please make a tax-deductible in Australia. Donations at this link: https://wra.org.au/2410ruralhealth/

It’s Tax Time. Please make a tax deductible donation to help train Solomon Islands Nurses to give health care in remote islands and villages. This is an Australian registered charity making a difference in a country on our doorstep. In the Solomon Islands there is a lack of health care workers in particular doctors and nurses. Many island clinics do not have doctors so nurses provide the health care. The idea of this project is to not only support Nurse sponsorships but improve Nursing Education. If you can donate $10, $20, $100 or whatever you can afford, your donation will be appreciated. Please click on this link to donate. https://wra.org.au/1720nursing

Our Story

Currently, the Solomon Islands lack an adequate supply of trained healthcare workers including nurses and doctors. There are only two trained doctors for every 10,000 people in the Solomon Islands, a country which is comprised of more than 900 islands, separated by seas and volcanic mountains.

The area is prone to horrific natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes and heavy rain and floods, which often drives droves of people to clinics and hospitals. However, there are only 12 hospitals over the 900 islands and only 340 health care clinics to serve the rural population. Often there have been disease outbreaks like dengue fever, malaria and emerging chikungkunya which have left the health system in shambles with insufficient health workers.

“ Imagine spending your entire weekly food budget on a hours long truck ride along bumpy and dusty dirt roads in tropical heat when you are sick or pregnant to reach a nearby clinic just to find there is only one nurse and no doctor? “This is often the case in the Solomon Islands. Unfortunately, people including the young die easily there from a disease that we would get better from with our health care in Australia.
