Saving the 🌏 one wheel cylinder at a time! 🔄

Here's something interesting from the Partswise archives!

We started brake remanufacturing in 1998. Primarily this was the re-sleeving and kitting of wheel cylinders and master cylinders. During the period from 2002 to 2012 we were responsible for the maintenance and reconditioning of all the brake components for the Country Fire Authority fleet which consisted of about 1200 trucks.

During this period we stainless sleeved the wheel cylinders on the CFA fleet to increase the longevity of the brakes (previously new O.E. wheel cylinders were only lasting 3-4 years) and to this day many of these trucks are still actively fighting fires in the toughest conditions.

This month we had the cylinders off a truck that we rebuilt in 2002 sent back for a birthday 🎂. The stainless-steel sleeves had served the old truck well and only needed a light hone, some new seals and they are ready for another 10 years of service.

Another weekend, another car museum collection😊

This time we headed to the Fox Classic Car Collection in Melbourne where we enjoyed checking out luxury, classic and vintage cars, many of which we’ve had the honour of rebuilding the brakes for.

The Fox Classic Car Collection is well worth visiting! Housed in the historic Queen’s Warehouse, which was built as a Customs Bonded Store in 1890’s in American Romanesque style, the Fox Collection contains dozens of the world’s most rare and prestigious vehicles collected over a 50 year period by Lindsay Fox.

The Fox Car Collection is constantly rotated so that maintenance, cleaning and testing can be done on each vehicle and this is where we’ve been lucky enough to play a small part in rebuilding many of the brake components on these classics including the VERY RARE 1958 Porsche 718RSK which is the only 1 of its kind in Australia and 1 of 34 cars produced in the world.

The Mercedes Benz 1953 300SL Gullwing is an impressive display; it is one of the greatest sports cars of all time with only 1’400 vehicles ever build. A 1950’s post-war supercar, it was the worlds first four-stroke production passenger car to be equipped with direct fuel injection and we have been fortunate enough to be involved in rebuilding the complete hydraulic braking system on this vehicle.

Apparently, there was never a better Mercedes than the 600 and there may not ever be.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 “Grosser” was an iconic limousine, one of extreme luxury, built by Mercedes between 1963 & 1981. During its production run, Mercedes only built 2’677 of the 600’s and they were built by hand, to a level of quality that surpasses even today’s standards, without considering the cost.

Here at Partwise we were commissioned to remanufacture a full set of calipers for one of these vintage beauties residing here in Victoria! This included drawing and manufacturing new Nedox coated caliper pistons, rebuilding the 2 aluminium rear handbrake calipers and the 4 cast iron front calipers including re-sleeving of the bores in custom 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel (two calipers per front wheel).

The Grosser, once the most expensive car in the world, is almost 6.5 metres long, weighing over four tonnes and its 6.3lt V8 engine is so gutsy it could anchor a cruise ship - even these custom rebuilt front calipers weigh a mean 5.58kgs each and remember, there’s two calipers per wheel on the front!

Fun fact: the hydraulic window winder is so powerful it could take a limb off, which is one of the reasons why this car was favoured by historic Dictators around the world. It was also extremely quite and pretty much bullet proof.
