Throughout the world, the movement for training ministry apprentices is gaining exciting momentum. In South Africa, the established ministry apprenticeship program overseen by The Bible Talks KZN has been maturing thanks to the graciousness of God!
The program aims to train and equip the next generation of men and women for Christian ministry, particularly within and for the KwaZulu Natal and South African context.
Currently, they have two apprentices, Siyanda and Nomfundo, going through the program, financially supported by Australian MTS trainers and apprentices. Anglican Aid partners with MTS to facilitate international funds transfer, compliance and project reporting.

Fellowship with other Christians who are, like you, considering how to live life in response to the gospel of Jesus!
Previous attendee Ben from Hunter Bible Church says, “I loved MTS Recruit this year. One of the highlights was 1-1 mentoring with someone experienced as a gospel worker - to ask questions and get prompted to consider things I haven’t thought about. Another highlight was peer groups, most of my group I didn’t know going in but loved conversations grounded in the bible with people at a similar point of thinking about MTS and a lifetime of ministry.”

Understanding MTS Entrusters 👐
82% of MTS Apprentices say that the biggest influence for them taking up ministry training is another gospel worker. The “tap on the shoulder”, where a mentor or ministry leader prompts a potential gospel worker to take up an apprenticeship, is key.
Entrusters are MTS Trainers, who have trained someone who then goes on to be an MTS Trainer themselves!
MTS Director Ben Pfahlert says, “We’d love all MTS Apprentices, as their God-given gifts allow, to become MTS entrusters.”
Last month James Hoey, former Partnerships Developer for Victoria stepped into the role of MTS Director of Partnerships!
We’re so excited for James to continue doing excellent work in Victoria and throughout Australia on pathways for partnerships.
James says, “As the Director of Partnerships, my role is helping denominations, other parachurch ministries and churches to think through how they can enable their pastors to go from a church pastor to become an MTS trainer.
This means helping them with the resources and the theology of training and showing them how MTS can continue to support them as they train the next generation of gospel workers.”

What are the skills a ministry apprentice needs to learn to be prepared for ministry?
Our minds often go to very visible and practical things. This might be how to write and give a talk, or to feel confident leading the youth ministry team. However, other more personal life skills are equally as important for apprentices to learn. One of these is how to be spiritually healthy.

“I came back with a great heart for training up men and women for vocational ministry. That was always on the agenda. The intentionality that I had experienced at St. George North Anglican to then go back and be intentional myself as a trainer has just been wonderful.”
God’s faithful hand has been clear throughout Avril Lonsdale’s life, leading her to new life in him and now into vocational ministry. She shares her encouraging story of faith and experience as an MTS apprentice and now MTS trainer!

If you’re the praying kind could you ask God to bless my next 2 days in Brisbane at GAFCON Australia (the Global Anglican Futures Conference for Australia). We’re already doing so in several countries. Praise God. Lots of work to do. Please pray.
BTW - MTS is a sponsor. I will be attending the table. 36 hrs of “yakkin’” with people. It is my idea of fun! 😀

MTS Trainer Dave Doran is the Senior Pastor at Holy Trinity Kingsford Anglican Church. He recently shared some thoughts with us on the importance of fostering spiritual health in ministry apprentices!
Dave says, “When we are personally growing in our knowledge of God, we will also better understand ourselves and our place in God’s plans. We will have perspective to prioritise God’s glory, trust to regularly rest and joy even when we hit ministry setbacks. Before we learn pragmatic lessons we must keep growing in the ‘wisdom that comes from above’, which is really fostered by the fundamentals of Bible reading, prayer and mutually generous Christian fellowship.” Dave shares.

Look up ‘Commending & Contending’ on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. 🎧
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been sharing how some of the MTS team enable effective ministry trainers, and the flow on impact of these amazing trainers.
⚡️Through the training work of Russ we see effectively trained trainers who train quality apprentices to be skilled ministry workers.
⚡️Through the operations work of Brett we see trainers freed up from admin to focus on training their apprentices with confidence.
⚡️Through the partnership work of James we see more pastors become trainers raising up apprentices to train.
➡️ But perhaps our most significant ‘team member’ who we haven’t profiled is you! It is through your contribution to MTS that we are able to do the work God has entrusted us with.
So please consider a generous gift this end of financial year to help reach our goal of raising $195,000, to help continue and expand the ministry of MTS!
