Why good water management is so important – and has such a big impact on lives, communities and the planet.
Permaculture and water conservation are inseparable. In fact, permaculture design starts with water—observing rainfall patterns across an area of land and considering the shape of the land so that each drop of rain can bring as much benefit as possible.
With poor management, communities and ecosystems can experience little-to-no water security, topsoil erosion, increased impact of droughts, and disasters like flooding and landslides... so it's *very* important to know how to conserve water properly.
The positives of proper management? Here's a neat list (that only scratches the surface):
💧 Aquifers are replenished, natural springs are restored, small reservoirs provide water for animals, trees and agriculture
💧 Crop yields are more consistent and resilient
💧 Drought impacts are reduced
💧 Environmental restoration of fragile and damaged ecosystems is greatly enhanced, providing better protection for estuaries and coastal ocean ecosystems
Through permaculture, we appreciate water as the precious resource that it is!
