Queerbetika” is a term used to describe the queering of the genre of rebetika – an urban Greek popular song from the late 19th century to the 1950s – through academic or creative interventions. This zine explores queerness and homosexuality in rebetika through its exponents, sites of performance, gay supporters and song lyrics.
This is the first study and anthology in either Greek or English to investigate such an important but overlooked theme in the field of rebetology.

"..Columbia Records factory in the Athens suburb of Rizoupoli [Ριζούπολη]. The first of its kind in Greece, the factory was established in 1930 by the British Columbia Graphophone Company in order to expand its activities in the Middle East and Balkan regions. Construction work began in 1928 and was finished in December 1930, with the site spanning 3.5 acres at 127 Iraklion Avenue [Λεωφόρος Ηρακλείου 127]. The first 78rpm shellac disc was pressed on December 20th, 1930, however an actual recording studio was not established on the site until 1935, dubbed “Studio III”. 2019 Rebetiko Festival: The surge of the underground
Rebetiko (Greek Blues) urban improvised music is a meld of Byzantine, Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Jewish Sephardic, jazz, and Latin music.
It is the music born in Smyrna (Izmir) and Constantinople (Istanbul) around the turn of the 20th Century. Contemporary Rebetiko pays homage to the past and reflects a modern Greece with new Middle Easter, African and Western influences.
Direct from Greece, Rebetien showcases its fresh Rebetiko sound along with local Australian Rebetiko artists. The full program will be announced in January 2019.
