Good Gear Naturals
100 % Natural, Australian made products for Equine Hoof and Skin Issues.
Well amen to this ….
Oh dear I have gone and done it again… 🥹🥹🥹
not posted for AGES…. As Meta so gleefully reminds me …. 183 days this time - it’s got to be a record even for me.
To be honest, I was really struggling to know what even to post about… 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
I was tempted to comment on how political hoof care seems to have become especially after seeing how a very generous and charitable hoof education person was treated by some people when one of her ponies came down with laminitis. 😳😳😳
Then I thought about posting about how depressing it is every time I see a post on one of the horse groups where people are still recommending bleach or chemical laden treatments for thrush….🙄🙄🙄
I didn’t decide on either of those because they were really negative.
Then out of the blue just like that I received a phone call from a long term customer who just randomly thought she would holler out and tell me how much she loves Good Gear Products and how well Stay Put Cream and Hoof Clay work for Thrush and Seedy Toe … how she always has both products on hand and how she recommends Good Gear to everyone . 🤩🤩🤩
And you know what, it was literally the best thing she could have done for me in this particular moment in time and space 💕💕💕
I often get messages from happy customers on Facey telling me of their success using my products
It always makes me happy to know I’m helping someone or that I’m helping someone’s horse .
That’s really what it’s all about for me .
So the moral of the story here I guess is …. If you have favourite products made by a small
business person and you have thought about sending them some nice feedback ….. DO IT 😉😉😉
And to the customer that called me
THANK YOU 💕💕💕
If anyone ever says to you “ it’s only Thrush” …. This is what thrush can do!
Yes this would be sore for the horse too.
When I talk to my customers about deep thrush - this is what I am talking about .
Be Vigilant. Clean out the central sulcus carefully and look for signs of deep thrush .
AND
Stay Put Cream is the absolute best thing there is for deep thrush .
It doesn’t hurt the sensitive tissue, it doesn’t burn like copper sulphate and it’s not carcinogenic 😊
Thrush.
My last post showed you an image of a slice through the horse’s foot at the area by the bulbs. You could see that the slice through the digital cushion had light showing through the “slit” meaning it was not dense healthy frog tissue. That part sticking up is called the frog spine or frog stay. It should be a thick strong structure that bisects the digital cushion, and looks a bit like a shark fin. It’s important because it helps to stabilise the back of the foot and helps to resist the shear forces that can occur between the heels. It also has numerous micro cartilage strands attached to it, and they attach to the collateral cartilages. They help to keep the cushion strong, resist tearing and resist it being stretched outside its allowable stretch.
Photo 1 shows the effect of thrush. It’s affect can be hidden to horse owners unless they investigate the slit in the centre of the frog, towards the back to the foot. A slit is not healthy and needs investigation. Thrush actually eats away at the frog tissue, destroying it, and making it fragile.
Photo 2 shows a foot with a nice healthy frog spine. It’s not in exactly the same plane as photo 1 but it demonstrates well what we should be seeing. The frog spine consists of dense frog tissue and it is robust and thick. Look carefully at the white strands in the digital cushion, they are the fibrocartilage strands that I mentioned above. Many of you asked me to show you a healthy foot to compare.
If you can sink your hoof pick into the frog then there is trouble. Trouble that needs your help.

“ Ahhh Marg the rains are here “
Down here in the southern states we are heading into Winter… and it’s the start of stinky thrush season.
🥴🥴🥴
Here’s a couple of great videos provided by Matt Horsehelp showing :
✅how to clean out a thrushy hoof very thoroughly
✅how to easily treat thrush using Good Gear Naturals Hoof Clay
Can we just take a moment of appreciation for Matt that this is a miniature horse he’s working on …. Sooooo loooooow to the ground
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Video one is the cleaning out plus a bit of a frog tidy up … you can see the stinky black stuff he digs out of the collateral groove - that’s the thrush.
All I can say is thank goodness you can’t smell through the video 🤮
Video 2 is application of hoof clay.
To treat thrush all you need to do is pick out the area and smear in the hoof clay 5 days in a row .
The thrush will be GONE
I recommend a good clean out and application of the clay once a week to keep the thrush gone 😉
Our Hoof Clay contains NO copper sulphate, NO formalin or any nasty chemicals
EDIT - just discovered when I went to post that you can only put one video in a post so I’ll put the video of the Hoof clean up in the comments section 😉

SHOW ME YOUR PONIES 🐎🐎🐎Following on from my last post showing the horse that inspired the creation of Stay Put Cream and then Hoof Clay - here’s a pic of Teddy without the itch. He was such a special old man ❤️
Show me your equines that you use Good Gear products on please - include horses name and what products of ours you have used on them ….and GO 😊😊😊
When your spicy part arab mare decides to kick out at a horse in the paddock next to her and OF COURSE gets her leg caught in the process…. You arrive at the paddock and find …..
😱😱😱
(I’m popping the pics of the original wound and progressive healing in the comments because they might be a bit gross for some of you)
The pic here is the end result achieved using Stay Put Cream
The owner of this horse got the vet out and had some of our Stay Put Cream on hand as one of her horses had a bit of an issue with Mud Fever, which the Stay Put Cream had resolved.
If you look through the photos in the comments I think you’ll agree that the Stay Put Cream did a beautiful job.
I know everyone has their go to for wounds, but Stay Put Cream is SO GOOD for wounds….
The essential oils actually repel flies so if you don’t want to bandage or if the wound is in an area you can’t bandage…. Think about Stay Put Cream being your go to
😊😊😊
Happy New Year everyone !
Now that we are FINALLY getting some normal summer type weather down here in the southern states I have been seeing quite a few posts from horse owners wanting ideas for sun protection for their horses

Also I have slightly different brushes in stock at the moment they are more a medium size kabuki brush - EXTRA FLOOFY 😊😊😊

Well look at me on fire with a frenzy of posts -two days in a row!
A great testimonial for our Equine sunscreen powder and the Stay Put Cream.

One of the Stay Put Cream super powers is to sort out deep thrush.
That’s what it did for this happy customer 💕
Stay Put Cream - Good Gear Naturals Stay Put Cream all natural and effective treatment of thrush in hooves, rain scald, mud fever and Queensland Itch Hot Spots
Ahhhh goodness me - as Facebook Meta Business keeps gloatingly reminding me it’s been 93 days since I last posted on the Good Gear Naturals page 😱😱😱
*feels very guilty*
Of course I have lots of excuses… the major one being I didn’t really know what to post 😂
I’ve been slack also with the success stories from customers - keeping the photos and feeling happy for the success but not sharing them here.
*feels even guiltier *
So, I’m going to doing a few jobs on the page making some albums up with photos of success stories -getting organised. I’ll do some new videos and some photoshoots for my products and updating the website too ~ I still have pics of the hoof clay in the old plastic tubs I used to use on the website 🙄
*another guilty pang *
I am bringing out a 100ml new size in the Stay Put Cream, I have sourced good bottles and that means I’ll have a medium size in the cream instead of just small or large
If you have a success story using my products and some photos I would love to hear from you 😊
It really never ceases to amaze me what horses can come back from - whether it be injuries and wounds, starvation, or neglected hooves.
It’s so important to not get disheartened or overwhelmed when faced with issues -
like the amazing owner of this horse who trusted in the process.
Horse arrived in December 2021 with TERRIBLE feet. Owner corrected diet issues and deficiencies with a good mineral supplement, put the horse in a better environment for hoof health, worked with her Trimmer on 4 weekly trim cycles and used Good Gear Naturals Stay Put Cream and Hoof Clay. The process has taken 8 months but it just goes to show what amazing results the dedication, persistence and patience of the owner and hoof care professional as well as the incredible resilience of the horse can achieve

Thrush can have serious consequences.
Good Gear Naturals Hoof Clay and Stay Put Cream for thrush in hooves do not contain copper sulphate, gentian violet or formalin.
No caustic ingredients - no carcinogenic compounds✅
All natural ingredients and best of all Australian 🇦🇺 made
Experiment results!
I wanted to see how deep the thrush treatment went into the foot, on this particular foot.
There was a little white line separation, very minor, and a area of “seedy toe” in the left heel quarter.
The frog was not good, with 2 slits in the central sulcus, one was pretty deep.
Check my video from yesterday for details.
Findings.
The treatment covered the exfoliating frog well and went deep in the collateral grooves and central sulcus.
Some treatment penetrated the layers in the sole, the layers that looked like they were ready to exfoliate.
Take a close look at the frog, that part in the middle, the central sulcus….
The frog is missing tissue and you can see how much is missing. Look carefully, the gap is perilously close to the inner tissues, by about 2 mm.
Consider the frog exterior should be around 1 cm minimum from inner tissues… 2 mm is not good at all. Would you have guessed this was so deep?
So this leads me to say that thrush treatments that sting and destroy living tissue must be avoided. In this case, the best treatment would need to be gentle and considerate of how deep the slit is in the frog.
This slit would hurt… sensitive tissues including sensitive frog contains pain nerves.
Imagine a deep cut in the bottom of your foot at the heel.
Imaging putting caustic treatments on it.
Imagine how walking would be painful.
Your horse feels the same. Then to avoid the pain would change his gait to land on toes and not heels.
There is not much protection for the coffin bone at the toe. Imagine the huge energy that smashes up the foot as the toe first landing occurs.
Thrush is not to be ignored- I truly believe this. Even if you are told it’s not an issue or won’t hurt…. I’m not a vet farrier or trimmer, however I am an anatomist and have studied over 400 equine feet. I’ve seen thrush cripple horses.

This is an EXCELLENT experiment
This is EXACTLY why I cringe every time I see someone recommending caustic copper sulphate/ bluestone based treatments for thrush.
Yes bluestone is cheap. But it IS Caustic and does eat away at live tissue if the thrush is deep.
Lindsay used a gentian violet based treatment to see how deep the thrush went - this experiment was conducted on a cadaver.
That’s the other thing - two other treatments I see frequently recommended for thrush and seedy toe contain BOTH gentian violet AND formalin.
Gentian violet is synthetic - no it’s NOT made from violets - the name was given owing to the colour
Products containing it have been withdrawn from sale in numerous countries owing to it being carcinogenic - amongst other things.
https://www.healthline.com/health/baby/gentian-violet-thrush
(The link talks about gentian violet for oral thrush but in the article it also discusses the use of the chemical in veterinary applications )
And as for formalin - that’s pretty nasty stuff too.
The takeaway for me here is that Good Gear Naturals will never have anything blue or purple in our products. No Copper Sulphate/Bluestone, no gentian violet no formalin.
There’s simply no need.

It’s really so rewarding and wonderful when our customers share their stories of success with us 😊😊😊 Nothing, absolutely nothing makes us happier than hearing of our products helping horses and owners 🥰🥰🥰
Another success story for the much loved Stay Put Cream - brilliant on deep thrush, wounds and rainscald AS WELL as Greasy Heel
Today we received the following message from Bonnie
“Our Lola pony recently got greasy heel, and can I say, the stay put cream was a miracle worker to assist in getting rid of it. Now we use your powder sunscreen to help prevent it coming back! 💗
Nothing else worked! We were fighting with it for ages, so coming across this was awesome!”
THANK YOU Bonnie for sharing of your success and also we are so happy that Lola has healed so well 💕💕💕
🙏🙏🙏
So we all know how good Stay Put Cream is for deep thrush, seedy toe, greasy heel … but did you know it is simply quite amazing for wounds ?
This filly injured her hoof quite badly on 26th August. Vet attended and cleaned up. The very dedicated owner has since been bandaging, cleaning and using Stay Put Cream on the injury, and Hoof Clay on the underside of the hoof.
The initial injury pics are quite gruesome so fair warning given. I’ll pop them in the comments
The main pictures here are the progress photos of today -
Can’t tell you how happy I am for this horse and for the owner 😊
Summer is not far away - are you prepared ?

Excited to announce that Matt Horsehelp is now stocking the full range of Good Gear Naturals products -Hoof Clay, Stay Put Cream and Equine Sunscreen Powder 😊😊😊
Matt is the official Farrier and hoof care educator for Equitana
He’s all about the best thing for the horse and that’s the best ethic you can have as far as we are concerned✅✅✅
Another day another example of what can be achieved with the help of a great Hoof Care professional, a dedicated owner and some Good Gear Naturals Hoof Clay and Stay Put Cream 🙂
These hooves belong to a little guy named Highway Thunder.
He was named this because he was filmed scooting down a highway in Queensland.
He was taken into care by the amazing Katy Driver and for the past 10 months he has been the recipient of some amazing rehabilitation.
You can see by the first series of pics what a state his feet were in.
Neglected for years. 😞
It never ceases to amaze me to see what horses can come back from.
Yes it’s taken a good 10 months but truly what a transformation!
Katy used Stay Put Cream for the deep thrush in the mushy excuse for a frog and hoof clay everywhere else.
WINNING 🏆
