🌴 MY TROPICAL GARDEN IN WINTER - can the plants survive? 🤔
"We are halfway through winter so I thought I'll check in on the garden ... so far so good ..."

🐝
Why is it so important for us to create pollinator habitat in our own yards?
Habitat that pollinators need in order to survive is shrinking. As native vegetation is replaced by roadways, manicured lawns, crops and non-native gardens, pollinators lose the food and nesting sites that are necessary for their survival.
Remaining patches of prairie and meadow have become more disconnected. That makes it harder for pollinators to reach new breeding sites or find better habitat.
Migratory pollinators face special challenges. If the distance between the suitable habitat patches along their migration route is too great, smaller, weaker individuals may die during their journey.
With approximately 40 million acres of sterile, green, manicured lawn in the United States it is important for homeowners to realize that our front lawns are the front lines!
This graphic from Pollinator Pathways illustrates this very well.
ETA: While I didn't create this graphic, my assumption is that "honey bees" are not included because they are a non-native species.

🌱 WHY IS MY BROMELIAD PLANT DYING? 🌿
🌸✨Did you know that some plants bloom only once in their lifetime? These unique plants, known as monocarpic, pour all their energy into one extraordinary flowering event before setting seeds and then dying. This fascinating life cycle is seen in plants like agaves, bamboos, and even some types of palms.
🌿 Monocarpic plants aren't just annuals; they can also be biennials or perennials, living for several years before their spectacular bloom. Their single flowering event is not just a beautiful display but a vital part of their life cycle, ensuring the continuation of their species.
One well-known monocarpic plant is the bromeliad. These tropical beauties, native to Central and South America, are popular for their vibrant foliage and long-lasting blooms. Even though they flower only once, bromeliads often produce "pups" or offsets, ensuring their legacy continues. 🌺🪴
💚 Why Love Monocarpic Plants and Bromeliads?
• Spectacular Blooms: Once-in-a-lifetime flowering event.
• Easy to Care For: Ideal for indoor gardening.
• Unique Watering Needs: Bromeliads prefer to have their central cup filled with water.
• Brighten Any Space: Their exotic look adds a touch of the tropics to your home.
Bring home a piece of this natural wonder and watch as your monocarpic plant prepares for its grand finale. Check out our collection today and add some exotic beauty to your garden or indoor space! 🌟

🌿 9th BOTANIC GARDENS DAY 2024
📰 Sunday 26th May 2024
🎋 “Botanic Gardens Day is an annual day of celebration to highlight the role of plants in our lives and the important work botanic gardens and arboreta undertake every day to conserve them for future generations.
🌱 THIS YEAR’S THEME IS ‘MORE THAN A GARDEN…PROTECTING OUR PLANTS AND LANDSCAPES’
🙌 The theme reflects the fact that botanic gardens and arboreta are not only nice places to visit — they also conduct ecological research, safeguard plant diversity through living collections and seed banks and educate and empower communities in environmental sustainability.
💚 Botanic gardens are known as vital green spaces of social, cultural and heritage value within communities, but are also increasingly being recognised as the frontline in tackling the biggest challenges facing our future — biodiversity loss, adaptation to a changing climate, food security and pest and disease management.”
