This week our Designers Lens is focusing on the history of Interior Design and Decoration is Medieval Europe - this is an exceptional overview of the conversion of THE ROYAL ABBEY FONTEVRAUD Since its creation nearly a thousand years ago by an eccentric monk, the Abbey has always been a ‘singular foundation’. A place of diversity! The Abbey was run by an abbess, who gave shelter to men and women in the four priories. The adaptive reuse conversion was produced by the design duo Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku who worked closely with the interior design and fit-out company CAA Agencement and local companies accompanied by French manufacturers such as Ligne Roset, Observatoire international, Brossier Saderne, Biosense and Burov. A must watch!

NARRATIVE + FUNCTION in MEDIEVAL INTERIORS
Essential pieces of furniture such as beds, chests, tables, benches and chairs were predominant in medieval houses. Textile wall hangings served as both decoration and insulation. Although homes had several rooms, they were used for various purposes. Specialisation of room function did not happen until the Renaissance.
History breathes through contemporary interiors . We love this boutique Monteverdi Hotel in Tuscany, which includes rustic bedroom suites and a cavernous spa.

“RINASCIMENTO”
The ‘renaissance man’ was the master of more than one discipline – they were polymaths who were painters, sculptors and architects – sometimes with other skills as well

We have printed locally with Materialised on Crypton George base cloth - railroaded so as not to have joins in the upholstery where we don't want them - a durable, textured velvet cloth featuring a waterproof backing. I ended up using lluvia from our Valencia Verde palette. I know, it's grey, but a subtle, dusty beige grey (can't really tell from the photo). Half way through I asked myself why I was again painting a piece with so many faces! It would have been better to spray paint but I don't have a sprayer - yet.
Note to self: stick to pieces with larger surface areas!
