🎉✨ Celebrating Jason Liman Olsen ✨🎉

Meet Jason, a proud Batjamal man hailing from Darwin in the heart of the Northern Territory. Son to Caroline Yilngi Olsen and grandson to the incredible Imelda Melamurrk Wood, Jason's roots run deep with his rich culture and heritage.

Growing up between Bulgul and Darwin, Jason's journey has been a beautiful blend of urban life and traditional teachings. Schooling in Darwin and returning to Bulgul during breaks allowed him to immerse himself in the wisdom of his Ancestors, fostering a deep connection to his land and people.

But Jason's passion doesn't stop there. 🎨 Determined to preserve and share his people's stories, he turned to art as a powerful medium of expression. Alongside fellow artists Heath Wilson and Tory McCarthy, Jason paints with purpose, weaving tales of tradition and resilience onto his canvas.

Now based in Darwin, Jason devotes his days to both work and art, constantly seeking inspiration to breathe life into his creations. Guided by his family and fueled by a thirst for growth, he's on a journey of continuous improvement, honing his craft with each stroke.

And the art world is starting to take notice. 🌟 In 2023, Jason's remarkable talent earned him a spot as a finalist in the prestigious Calleen Art Award, a testament to his boundless creativity and dedication.

Staff Pick from our current exhibition: Dorothy Napangardi

"Black and white was pioneered and perfected by the late great Dorothy Napangardi,

Her meticulous use of linear dotting created the illusion of travelling tracks and movement across the desert floor unlike any other artist.

She was at the forefront of the group of artists who painted their dreamings far out into the Tanami desert and chose black and white to reflect this.

Mina Mina was portrayed with the use of mostly white dotting on black surface to construct the shimmering salt pans and underground water systems that run under one of the harshest and most remote desert landscape in the world.

Decoratively, Dorothys sit it their own space as the paired back neutral palette doesn’t conform to its surrounds in a bold or stand out way, but compliments the use of its neighbouring colours to further enhance any environment its placed in." - Daniel, Senior Art Consultant

✨Step into the mesmerizing world of Ethan's Iningai – Marrangal series✨

These artworks are a homage to the great warrior and hunter spirit of the Iningai people.

Oblong motifs within these paintings reference the nulla-nulla, a multipurpose hardwood club wielded by skilled hunters. Legends speak of a warrior who could vanish with the light. In Ethan's artworks, the metallic paint captures this elusive essence, ensnaring the viewer in its ethereal glow.

As Ethan explains “by the time you see the shimmer, it’s too late – he’s already got you.”
