What is the effect of side-lying position on infant oropharyngeal swallow function? This pilot study found side-lying position during feeding decreased the incidence of aspiration for some, but not all, at-risk infants. Suggesting the physiology underlying this improved airway protection appears, at least in part, related to timelier swallow
initiation and improved coordination of swallowing and respiration. The authors conclude side-lying position should be considered as a potential strategy to improve swallow safety in infants who are at risk for dysphagia.

Members of the NIDCAP Federation International recently published a mini-review of . The authors highlight NIDCAP is a system-based, process-oriented, attuned and responsive intervention for individualised developmental care for infants and families. Evidence shows NIDCAP significantly improves medical outcomes, with less time on the ventilator, improved weight gain, decreased length of stay, improved developmental outcomes and enhanced infant and family relationships. Evidence suggests that NIDCAP as an intervention improves parental competence, decreases stress for HCP teams and improves HCP satisfaction.

Neuroprotective tip: three practice points elevated side-lying feeding. Elevated side-lying feeding is increasingly utilised in the unit as a supportive feeding intervention. The research and evidence supporting the practice is limited and evolving, a recent pilot highlighted the three points we have shared.

Recent research undertaken in our Training centre explored the impact of education programs on surgical nurses perceptions of its application. High levels of agreement (>90 %) were reported regarding the benefits of developmental care for parents and infants. Exposure to developmental care education influenced perceptions of its application. Nurses without formal developmental care education were more likely to agree that it was consistently applied [OR:3.3, 95%CI:1.3–8.6], developmental care skills are valued [OR:2.7, 95%CI:1.1–6.8], and that their nursing peers offered support in its application ([OR:2.5, 95%CI:1.1–6.2]. The article includes recommendations for the implementation of developmental care programs in the surgical NICU setting.

Are you based in NZ and a member of the Neonatal Nurses College of Aotearoa - NNCA? They are funding a level 1 program later this year. You can find out more details and how to apply at the link!

The NNCA and FINE are proud to announce the launch of NNCA funded FINE Level 1 training!

❓What is FINE Level 1? FINE Level 1 is considered a foundational education programme that introduces the scope and evidence behind infant and family centred developmental care. It aims to identify gaps in knowledge and skills, share ideas, and question assumptions about practice. Our hope is that those who attend will contribute to neurodevelopmental practice and police change in their areas.

❓How many funded places are available? We have 25 fully funded places available. We will be aiming to spread the allocation of places across Aotearoa, but giving priority to those neonatal units that do not currently have FINE trained staff. We have 5 places ringfenced for rural/remote units and/or units supporting Māori communities.

❓When is the training and what does it involve? The course is being run on 18th October 2024, and involves approximately 3 hours of pre-reading and self directed learning, and a one day, 8 hour online training.

❓Who can apply? Any nurse who works within neonatal services, and is a member of the NNCA. All applicants are expected to have endorsement from their manager or educator.

❓How do we apply? All nurse managers should have received the application information and forms from the NNCA and be making these available to their staff. Application forms are to be emailed back to the NNCA email- [email protected]. The information and application form will also be available on the NNCA website under “Conferences and Events” in the coming days. Applications close on 12th July 2024.

❓How will I know if my application has been successful? Once the NNCA committee have allocated places you will receive and email stating you have been successful, and more details surrounding the training. Places will be confirmed by email by August 5th 2024.

We look forward to receiving your applications, and supporting our members through an amazing education opportunity!

What are some of the barriers to infant and family centred care? Barriers found in the hospital and neonatal unit were related to financing, staffing, infrastructure, access to knowledge/information and learning climate, leadership engagement, and relative priority of IFCDC. Contextual barriers were related to peer pressure and partnerships, newborn/parent needs and resources, external policy, and budgetary incentives. Are these the barriers you face in your unit if so how are you overcoming them?

A recent publication found that although skin to skin (SSC) and family centred care (FCC) may be considered as separate practices within DC, the promotion of SSC also supports the application of FCC. With nurses who felt that their unit performs well in providing FCC correlating to their perception of SSC implementation, training and education about SSC. Highlighting the importance of viewing DC as a concept with integrated rather than independent components.

Skin-to-skin transfer from the delivery room to the neonatal unit for neonates of 1,500g or above: a feasibility and safety study 16/05/2024

Do you have a chair where you can transfer infants in skin to skin from the delivery room to the unit? This recent research suggests perhaps this is a piece of equipment we should all be looking to purchase! The authors found SSC transfers were associated with gradually decreasing heart rate (HR) values, stable oxygen saturation levels (SpO2), and no increase in median fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2). Heatloss was predominantly observed during initial setup of SSC. There was no significant difference in the occurrence of tachycardia, desaturation or hypothermia between preterm and term neonates. The authors concluded skin-to-skin transfer of infants with a birthweight of equal or above 1,500 g using the Tandem shuttle is feasible and associated with stable physiological parameters.

Skin-to-skin transfer from the delivery room to the neonatal unit for neonates of 1,500g or above: a feasibility and safety study ObjectiveImmediate skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is already standard care for healthy term newborns, but its use for term or preterm newborns requiring admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with or without respiratory support is challenging.
