We have been a bit quiet on socials lately. To be honest I cannot believe it is already nearly June! Where has this year gone?!
I have felt like the last month or so has been a time of reflection, goal setting and re-centring myself as I have been feeling a little lost. Rather than trying not to get too overwhelmed, I have taken the time to re-focus and become clear on what I am wanting for the remainder of the year as well as trying to relax and slow down (hello burn out).
Here are some quotes that have helped me with this and I hope that if anyone is feeling the same way that they might help you as well. My personal favourite is “you are closer than you were yesterday”. This is so important. You may not think you have made any progress or think that you are only making slow progress, but you are always going to be closer than yesterday. So simple yet so true.
I hope everyone has a lovely rest of their week and finds some time for themselves, even if it is only for a few minutes 🤍
Q & A with Miki!!
A great way to get to know a brand is Q & A’s, so I have filmed a little video answering a few questions that you have asked me in the past as well as touching on a few important points!
I hope you all enjoy getting to know a little more about me and my brand, feel free to leave any other questions in the comments below!
P.S excuse the elastic band in my hand throughout this video, I fidget when I’m nervous 😅😅
M E E T K A R E N 👋🏼
Introducing the lovely Karen! Karen runs a small clothing manufacturing business where herself and her team make all of our swimwear pieces, right here in Australia. Myself (Mikaela) and Karen correspond regularly between phone calls and emails, as well as visiting Karen’s factory in person.
Karen is all about sustainability - all of her fabric scraps that are unusable, she donated to local schools to use for craft (so cute!). She also recycles EVERYTHING, including the little cylinders that hold her thread together. Fun fact, I didn’t know this about her until we met and got chatting about the fashion industry. It was a perfect match!
Karen loves supporting Australian businesses! She understands the importance of manufacturing in Australia where possible as it keeps Australians in a job, while producing high quality garments that are made to last. She is full of ideas and is constantly offering advice or tips on making something in a better/smarter way.
If you have any of our pieces and love how well made and fitted they are, then you have Karen to thank 😉😉
This week is the start of Fashion Revolution Week 2022 which happens every year. April 24th is the anniversary of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh. This building housed a number of garment workers employing thousands of people. These factories produced garments for many of the biggest global fashion labels. More than 1,100 people, mostly women died in the collapse and 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history.
So why do we need Fashion Revolution Week?
Fashion Revolution Week exists to ensure that no tragedy like this will ever happen again. We need to educate and inspire future generations to understand the importance of sustainable fashion so that our garment workers can be paid fairly and work under appropriate working conditions. It also holds brands accountable if their consumers are asking questions about their supply chain(s) and how their garments are made. Throughout the pandemic, fashion brands have profited immensely whilst the workers that make our clothing still remain trapped in poverty. The majority of people making our clothes are not paid enough to meet their basic needs.
Through bringing awareness to this global issue through gentle education, we are one step closer to building a sustainable future where everyone is treated and paid fairly.
This week, we will be taking you through the journey of how our garments are made and the processes we go through to be a sustainable brand. We believe it is just as important to show our transparency as a brand and not just talk the talk.
If you would like to learn more about the Rana Plaza collapse, there is a brilliant documentary called “The True Cost” that highlights the industry and what it is like to be a garment worker in a third world country.
Missing these warm days, I think it’s time for a holiday! Where are your travel plans taking you this year? 🤍
This could not be said better. We as a society are so used to buying cheap clothing, that when something is a lot more expensive but it is ethically and sustainably made, we unfortunately tend to go with the cheaper option. We don’t really stop and think how something is made. Unfortunately products that have been made sustainably and ethically cost more to make, therefore causing the price of the product to have a big price tag. Not everyone can afford to spend that kind of of money on clothing. I get it. I understand.
This is why at Miki Swim, I have tried to make our products affordable while making sure they are made using high quality fabrics while working with local manufacturers. How is this possible you may ask? It is possible because we as a brand make less profit than those of a fast fashion brand. A LOT less!!
So please, next time you are considering buying from a fast fashion brand because it’s “cheaper” or “everyone else is wearing it”, please consider all the sustainable and ethically made small businesses out their that care about where their products are made and the safety of those who make them.
I have tagged some of my favourite brands, boutiques and resources for shopping sustainably, as I know finding the brands in the first place can be half the battle.
We only have one life, so why don’t we make it one where everyone is treated with respect, feels safe in their work place and is paid fairly.
Miki xx

Let’s talk about self care 🤍
Us as humans have such busy lives, both work wise and personal that we often forget to care for ourselves sometimes. Self care can come in many forms, such as saying no to something you don’t want to do, getting a facial, cleaning your room, reading a book or watching a movie. It’s about taking time for yourself even if it’s just for a minute.
For me, I often work really really hard for long amounts of time to the point where I burn myself out and then I end up having to give myself alottt of self care because I’m so exhausted ( not a good example and do not recommend ).
My aim this year is to still work hard as for me that’s important especially if I want to achieve certain goals that I have set myself. But I also will be taking more time out of my day/week for self care. Some of my personal favourites ways to do this is take a bath, have a mid week dinner with friends, watch a few episodes of my favourite show ( FRIENDS 😍 ) or read a book at the beach.
What kind of self care will you be giving yourself this week? Comment below I would love to hear from you all # # #
Big yes!!! I’ll be the first one to tell you that running a small business is harddddd! There’s so much time and effort that goes on behind the scenes. Literally hours just planning our content and organising photoshoots etc, let alone when a new collection is to come out. BUT, seeing my designs come to life and having people wear them is what makes it all worth it!
If you’re thinking about starting a business, or you may even be wanting to achieve a particular goal this year, go for it!!! What do you have to loose? You’ll never know until you try.
What are some of your goals to achieve this year? Comment below I would love to hear them # # #
Craving a tropical getaway 🌿🌿🌿🌿
Let’s think about these words for a second. What do they mean to you? To me, they are a way to slow down and remind ourselves that we are all doing the best we can. In a world that is still full of anxiousness and uncertainty, we need to take the time for ourselves. You can still work hard towards your goals and you can still want to achieve everything you have set out for yourself, but it is okay if you need to also need to rest. These past few years have taken their toll on everyone, including myself.
I think that if we all remember to Be Grateful, Be Humble, Be Decent, Be Human, than the world will be a much happier place. We are all in this together, you are not alone 🤍
M Y L A B R A L E T T E 🤍

This is a reminder to take some time for you this week. Whether it’s reading a book, cooking your favourite meal, spending quality time with friends or watching your favourite tv show, do something that is for you and only. Show your self some love 🤍I enjoy spending time with friends and reading some of my book before bed, what’s yours?
Choose kindness, always 🤍
The world can be filled with negativity at times, especially in the more recent years. Peoples anxiety and stress are at all time highs. By having the mindset of choosing to be kind it will not only make yourself feel better, but also those around you. Everyone has a story we know nothing about. If we all would just take a second to pause from our busy lives, slow down and think before we react, the heaviness of our days/weeks/months/years may begin to feel a little lighter. We are in this together, we are strong and we can do this # # #
Loves an impromptu shoot exploring our beautiful beaches 🤍 Spending time at the beach would have to be one of my favourite things to do. What is your favourite beach? Comment below # # #
What is recycled polyester? You may here of brands now days using this material in various ranges, but what really is it and why is it good for the fashion industry?
Made from ECONYOL regenerated nylon, our swimwear fabric is soft, elegant and breathable with a mix of comfort and UV protection.
Fishing nets are just one of the sources of waste used to produce yarns and polymers, which then become ECONYOL fabrics.
These nets are usually recovered from areas of the fishing industry. 75,000kgs of fishing nets were collected in 2020.
By choosing brands that use recycled polyester, you are helping reduce the amount of new fabric being produced globally every year, whilst also assisting in the collection of fishing nets in our oceans.

5 Simple Tips to Become More Sustainable 🌿
1. Start with what you already have
We know that buying sustainability can be expensive, especially if you’re wanting to do it all at once. Try starting with what you already have, this way you are saving money while kick starting your goal!
2. Ask to borrow clothes
Who doesn’t love that feeling of a new outfit? But do we really need to buy new all the time? Try asking your friends/family to borrow their clothes, they will feel new to you!
3. Mend what you can
Sometimes our clothes just need some love. You could sew up the holes in your top or take them to a seamstress to alter or fix. This with lengthen the lifespan of your clothes and means you don’t have to keep buying new items when they get worn out. By buying better quality garments, your clothes will most likely last longer to begin with.
4. Donate what you no longer need
Some people don’t have the privilege to buy brand new, regardless as to whether it is sustainable or not. If you decide you no longer need some of your clothes, donate them to an op shop or charity!
5. Buy less, choose well
We’re not saying you can never buy new ever again, we are strong believers in treating yourself! All we are saying is that when buying new that you choose brands who are sustainable and use high quality materials. This may mean you have to save a little more than you would with a fast fashion brand, but not only will your latest purchase make you feel good, it will also be good for the planet!
This is your sign to take some time for yourself today, you deserve it! Our pieces are designed to be worn at any time in the day, not just at the beach. With their soft bamboo lining, you’ll feel comfortable all day long 🤍
For anyone who needs this today, you’ve got this 🤍✨
