Food (or should I say Oil) for thought 💭
Multiple Choice Quiz Time:
What would you do if you found out at a popular Essential Oil brand, well known Ph.D Chemist (with over 3 decades of experience and has written publications on adulteration), and an "essential oil education site and testing facility" have been promoting (for years) an essential oil to be 100% pure and sustainably sourced - with their GC/MS report to prove it - but you know without a shadow of a doubt, that there is not even 1 drop of that oil in that bottle?
Would you?
A: Ignore it and give them the benefit of the doubt.
B: Think it must be a once off mistake but everything else they promote/test/say would still be accurate.
C: Realize that if they can't identify adulteration in this oil, then how can they pick it up in others and therefore disregard anything they promote/test/say completely.
I ask this because after my post yesterday, the medical industry isn't the only one with liars. Our beloved essential oil industry has them too.
Some via ignorance and others via deception.
Both are unacceptable.
With no regulatory body holding the Essential Oil industry accountable, it continues to happen and the only 2 people who lose out in this situation?
1: The farmers who are actually growing the REAL plants.
2: You and me, the consumer. Who trust what they say is true.
Maybe integrity and authenticity isn't important to eveyrone, but to me - it's at the core of our values.
So when I see this, I speak up.
People deserve to know - and unfortunately, for the attuned customer, it means you need to go beyond the pretty marketing, beyond the testimonials and even beyond industry standard tests.
It's all fluff. Maybe that was fine in the 90's for people like my Mum and her oil burner, but not for me.
This is now a $20 Billion USD industry and where there is money to be made there will be people trying to take advantage.
The actual leading essential oil research institution (Aromatic Plant Research Center) have proven that 80% of all essential oils on the market today are adulterated. Sorry if that alarms you, but it's true.
Good news is, it's not all beautiful, and definetly not the ones I buy.
So all is not lost. There are still "the good ones" out there.
And I for one celebrate companies committed to doing the right thing regardless if anyone is watching.
So as a conscious consumer what do you look for?
Transparency and consistency.
When a company is proud of it's complete supply chain, who truly knows where every drop of oil has come from, could tell you the farmer's name, on what day the plants were distilled, run dozens of tests for contaminants at multiple stages (yes, every batch not just random ones), and pride themselves on their proven efficacy year after year.
That's my pick.
So I am a "C" what about you?
