Cordyceps and lung cancer research

Cordyceps sinensis (CS) is a fungus, parasitic on lepidopteran larvae, which is often used as a tonic and to treat lung diseases and regulate immune function. It is traditionally harvested with the caterpillars it grows on from the high mountain regions of China. However, most modern products contain a laboratory cultured version of the fungus. In the popular dystopic television series The Last of Us, a species related to Cordyceps had jumped to infecting people, wiping out most of humanity. The entomopathogenic (insect invading) fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (zombie-ant fungus) was made notorious by the TV series. So at least some medicinal plants are indirectly gaining notoriety, even if it is a negative fiction. But we should be aware of the power of Cordyceps for some very good reasons.

A group of Chinese scientists recently evaluated the evidence up to June 2022 for the efficacy of Cordyceps in the adjuvant treatment of lung cancer treated by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Only randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the efficacy of adjuvant Cordyceps treatment on its own were included. A total of 12 RCTs with 928 patients were identified for the meta-analysis.

Results showed that as an adjuvant treatment Cordyceps had the following benefits in the management of lung cancer:

(1) Improved tumour response rate (TRR) (RR, relative risk: 1.17, 95%CI, confidence interval: 1.05-1.29, P = 0.00)

(2) improved immune function, including increased CD4 (MD, mean difference: 4.98, 95%CI: 1.49-8.47, P = 0.01), CD8 (MD: 1.60, 95%CI: 0.40-2.81, P = 0.01, I2 = 0.00%), natural killer cells (MD: 4.17, 95%CI: 2.26-6.08, P = 0.00), IgA (MD: 1.29, 95%CI: 0.35-2.24, P = 0.01), IgG (MD: 3.95, 95%CI: 0.98-6.92, P = 0.01) and IgM (MD: 6.44, 95%CI: 0.63-12.26, P = 0.03)

(3) improved quality of life (QoL) based on the mean of the Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) (MD: 8.20, 95%CI: 6.87-9.53, P = 0.00)

(4) reduced incidence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), including the incidence of myelosuppression (RR: 0.38, 95%CI: 0.19-0.75, P = 0.01), leukopenia (RR: 0.76, 95%CI: 0.63-0.92, P = 0.00), and thrombocytopenia (RR: 0.52, 95%CI: 0.31-0.86, P = 0.01)

(5) reduced incidence of radiation pneumonitis (RR: 0.74, 95%CI: 0.62-0.88, P = 0.00), reduced liver and renal damage (RR: 0.32, 95%CI: 0.09-1.10, P = 0.07) and gastrointestinal adverse reactions (RR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.47-1.37, P = 0.42).

The authors concluded that, compared with conventional treatment, adjuvant treatment with Cordyceps of lung cancer not only improved TRR, QoL and immune function, but also reduced the incidence of ADRs and radiation pneumonitis. The optimal usage may be 6 g/day and 21 days per 3 to 4 cycles.

Mushroom Therapy –
The Dectin-1 receptor is a type of protein found on the surface of certain immune cells. It plays a crucial role in the recognition and response to fungal infections and in regulating inflammation and immune responses. When Dectin-1 encounters fungal pathogens, it triggers a signaling cascade that activates the immune response, leading to the elimination of the invading organism. This receptor has also been implicated in other immune-related diseases, such as asthma, allergies, and autoimmune disorders.
Recent studies have shown that the Dectin-1 receptor may play a role in the health benefits associated with mushroom consumption. Mushrooms contain beta-glucans, which are complex carbohydrates that can activate the Dectin-1 receptor on immune cells. When activated, the receptor triggers a cascade of immune responses that can help to boost the immune system and protect against diseases. Some studies have suggested that consuming mushrooms that are rich in beta-glucans may help to enhance immunity, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health. While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between the Dectin-1 receptor and mushroom consumption, the evidence so far is promising.
Exposure to toxic mould has been linked to a number of health problems, including respiratory issues, allergies, and infections. Recent research has shown that the Dectin-1 receptor may play a role in the immune response to mould exposure. When activated by mould particles, the receptor triggers an immune response that can help to clear the mould from the body and prevent further damage. However, some studies have suggested that chronic exposure to mould can impair the function of the Dectin-1 receptor, leading to a weakened immune response and increased susceptibility to infections. While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between the Dectin-1 receptor and mould exposure, the evidence so far suggests that it may play an important role in protecting against the harmful effects of toxic mould.
certain pathogens have been shown to evade or inhibit Dectin-1 recognition and signaling, which can impair the ability of the immune system to mount an effective response against the pathogen.

The Dectin-1 receptor has also been implicated in cancer immunotherapy. Recent research has shown that activating the Dectin-1 receptor on immune cells can stimulate an anti-tumor immune response, leading to the elimination of cancer cells. In some studies, combining Dectin-1 agonists with other cancer therapies has resulted in improved outcomes for patients with certain types of cancer. While more research is needed to fully understand the potential of targeting the Dectin-1 receptor for cancer treatment, the early results are promising. The Dectin-1 receptor may represent a new target for cancer immunotherapy, offering hope for patients with difficult-to-treat cancers.
Consuming the fruiting body of mushrooms and consuming mushroom extract can have different effects on the body due to differences in their composition and bioavailability. The fruiting body of mushrooms contains a complex mixture of compounds including polysaccharides, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. When consumed, these compounds are broken down by digestive enzymes and absorbed into the bloodstream. However, some of these compounds may not be efficiently absorbed due to their large molecular size or poor solubility. On the other hand, mushroom extract is a concentrated form of the bioactive compounds found in mushrooms. The extraction process can involve using hot water, ethanol, or other solvents to extract specific compounds such as polysaccharides, beta-glucans, or triterpenes. Mushroom extracts are often standardized to contain specific amounts of these bioactive compounds, which can make them more potent and consistent than consuming the fruiting body of mushrooms. One potential advantage of consuming mushroom extract is that it can provide a higher dose of bioactive compounds than consuming the fruiting body of mushrooms. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with specific health conditions or those looking to achieve a particular health benefit. However, it's worth noting that some compounds found in the fruiting body of mushrooms may have synergistic effects when consumed together, which may be lost when isolating specific compounds in an extract. Overall, the choice between consuming the fruiting body of mushrooms or mushroom extract may depend on individual preferences and health goals. While consuming the fruiting body of mushrooms provides a whole-food source of nutrients and bioactive compounds, mushroom extract may offer a more concentrated and targeted approach to achieving specific health benefits.
Eating mushrooms may have a positive effect on the composition of bowel flora. Mushrooms are a rich source of dietary fiber, which can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. The fiber in mushrooms is particularly rich in beta-glucans, which can act as prebiotics that selectively feed beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. In addition to their fiber content, mushrooms also contain a variety of bioactive compounds that may have antimicrobial properties. For example, some species of mushrooms contain polysaccharides and proteins that have been shown to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. These compounds may help to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut by reducing the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Furthermore, some studies have suggested that consuming mushrooms may increase the diversity of gut bacteria, which is generally considered a positive sign of a healthy gut microbiome. One study found that supplementing the diet of mice with a mushroom extract increased the diversity of their gut microbiota and improved their gut health. It's worth noting that the exact effect of eating mushrooms on bowel flora may depend on factors such as the type of mushroom consumed, the preparation method, and the individual's gut microbiome. However, overall, consuming mushrooms as part of a healthy diet may have positive effects on gut health and the composition of bowel flora.
You must consume at least 20 grams of cooked mushrooms daily to aid in this process.
Much of the research done so far has been done on our standard button mushrooms.
Mushroom cappuccino Recipe
1 punnet of mushrooms
1 punnet of mixed mushroom, i.e. oyster, turkey, sh*take, whatever your store has
1 litre of chicken stock or stock of your choice.
4 cloves of garlic
A good sprinkle of herb salt
Bring all to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and add 100 ml of cream or sour cream blend. You can freeze portions of this soup to enjoy another day. Enjoy

Another consideration is dust mite exposure. Have you vacuumed your bed lately?
Eating mushrooms daily, along with therapeutic mushroom tincture, can form a powerful treatment for mould exposure and anti-cancer treatment. Contact me if you are interested in an herbal formula to target the Dectin-1 activation.

want to incorporate beef liver in your diet without eating it.
Beef liver is a highly nutritious food that is rich in essential nutrients. It is one of the few foods that contain a high abundance of bioavailable nutrients, making it an excellent addition to your diet. Even small, infrequent servings of liver can make a noticeable difference to overall health. Organ meats, including liver, have been an essential staple food in all cultures throughout history. However, in recent times, they have fallen out of favour on our grocery lists. Finding at least one recipe that makes liver delicious to you is one of the simplest ways to boost your nutrition. Beef liver provides high levels of vitamins A, B12, B2, B9, and D, choline, copper, iron, and CoQ10. These nutrients are essential for healthy brain function, red blood cell formation, DNA formation, energy production, and cardiovascular health. Vitamin A is particularly important for healthy skin, vision, reproductive health, immune function, and reducing oxidative stress. If you can't stomach or access fresh liver, A+ Liver Capsules are a convenient way to get the benefits of beef liver without having to eat it. They are made from Australian grass-fed beef liver, are non-defatted, freeze-dried to preserve heat-sensitive nutrients, and are 100% pure with no additives.

Muscle Testing – Kinesiology
This is a simple way of confirming whether or not this particular food, supplement, ointment or whatever is the right one.
Muscle testing involves isolating one muscle, e.g. the deltoid, in the shoulder area, and checking a person's strength by exerting pressure against the movement of the muscle to detect energy imbalance.
If the muscle test gives a 'weak' or 'switched off' result, this is an indication that there is a short-circuiting in the energy system between the brain and the muscle.
Therefore a positive or strong response indicates a strengthening in the energy systems, therefore, confirming the body's need for this nutritional chemistry or tonic. The aim of herbs and food is to recharge the energy systems in the body.
Set a person on a comfortable chair with a baby on his/her knee, both feet flat on the floor - to ground the person, check posture is good. Make sure one arm is securely around the baby.
The person who is testing puts one hand flat over the deltoid muscle that is the top of the arm where the shoulder meets. The person being tested raises the arm straight out in front about level with eyes, toward the roof.
The person doing the test puts their other hand over the raised wrist.
Then the person being tested pushes up while the tester exerts a slight pressure downward.
From this, the tester gets a feel of the strength of the person being tested.
Now ask the person being tested or the baby to hold the bottle containing the herb, food, or whatever they want to be tested.
Repeat the process of the person pushing upward and you pushing downward.
Feel the energy difference, does it strengthen or weaken the person?
Of course, the more you practice this, the better you get and you can test anything you like this way. It's a matter of tuning in to the inner wisdom and the flow of the body.
here are a few YouTube links that may be of help.
there are some YouTube examples of slightly different styles

this is a snippet from my upcoming book -
"Dill for Baby or Adults tummy
Throughout history, parents have used herbs to help babies and children feel better.
Usually, the first herb a baby is given is dill. Dill is used for colic or tummy pains. Dill can be added in small drop doses, 2 drops at a time – to a baby's milk or combine with 2 drops of Dill Tincture with 4 drops of honey and 3 ml of boiled water and given directly.
The chemist will usually have “Gripe Water”
The actions of Dill are Antispasmodic, Carminative, Galactagogue, Stomachic, Aromatic, and Digestive Stimulant.
The history of Dill goes back as far as the Egyptian Papyri over 5000 years ago.
It was also used in biblical times to pay taxes.
Traditionally the seeds have been used for colic, however when using the seed it needs to be bruised and boiled.
Other uses of Dill:
Flatulence, and digestive spasms, sweetens the breath, and stimulate the appetite, as a tea for Hiccups, and as a Brain Tonic, seeds are used to flavor cakes, and seeds are soaked in oil and applied to skin ulcers to dry the ulcer out.
Dill is an easy herb to grow but cannot grow alongside Fennel
The Dill leaf is a spring herb and the seed is a summer herb great in salads."
enjoy

sorry to say I have had to adjust all prices of Herbal Formula's due to the rising cost of delivery and the increase in herb costs due to flood and fire, Also many herb crops have been wiped out in the last 12 months meaning more herbs will need to be imported from Canada, America and Europe, increasing prices.
In an effort to keep prices somewhat stable I will reduce the amount of tonic in each bottle back to the 500ml or 1000ml
I have not adjusted my prices for many years now

research into auto-immune conditions is finding a link between viral infections like EB, CMV, and other viruses. Herbal therapy targeted to the individual needs may be to treat the virus even if the blood viral load is low or you just the antibodies, microcirculation and immune response, this is where you need the guidance of a qualified herbalist. Covid may initiate an auto-immune microcirculation and micro-thrombotic condition affecting the lungs, heart, kidneys, and liver.
One thing you can do for yourself is to eat mushrooms daily, research is showing a lot of immune-modulating effects from mushrooms and much of it is from eating the fibrous mushroom body.

one of my favorite herbs
NAME, Amaranthus spp.
FAMILY NAME, Amaranthaceae
OTHER NAMES, Lady bleeding, Pilewort, Prince’s feather, Red cockscomb, Spleen amaranth, Floramor, Velvet flower, Flower gentle
HISTORY
The name derives from the Greek amaranton meaning “not fading” since the crimson flowers do not fade with the death of the plant, and thus the plant came to symbolize immortality. The bright red color led to the belief that the plant stopped all kinds of bleeding, part of the 17th-century school of thought known as the Doctrine of Signatures.
Amaranth is a vitamin-packed herb and was used by the Indians as a survival food. The mature seeds were eaten raw or mixed with cornmeal or added to soups. The leaves were used in place of spinach. Amaranth is frequently used in poetic literature as a symbol of constancy, fidelity, and immortality.

It is no secret that nutrient rich foods are essential to good health and longevity but with the increasing degradation of our soil, our food quality has diminished.

Regenerative farming practices have the potential to improve soil health, biodiversity and water storage, maintain agricultural productivity as well as increase farm profitability.

To ensure our communities can access the highest quality, most affordable local produce, I believe it is essential we support our farmers to help maintain the longevity of their businesses.

Safeguarding the future of agriculture & our food supply is essential.
