Providers in the Loddon Mallee Disability Alliance have raised concerns about funding shortfalls for participants with complex support needs such as Lee-Ellen Kirchhofer, interviewed by WIN News Bendigo.

Providers are having to cover these costs on top dealing with the cost impacts of the price review. See below the interview with Lee-Ellen and CEO of Golden City Support Services, Natasha Williams.

Hey leaders👋 we've got a question for you: do you know what your staff vacancy is? What about turnover?

Data is crucial for identifying workforce challenges - and to be able to come up with adequate targeted solutions.

According to Chief People Officer at Achieve Australia Angela Johnson, data was key to tackling how her organisation identified and tackled these issues.

"Just pumping resources into recruitment, we realised that maybe this is not just a recruitment problem but a retention problem as well... that was the start of us really digging deep into our data."

By using data, Angela saw a significant drop in her organisation's turnover. Learn exactly how much Achieve's turnover dropped, as well as how they're using data to address workforce retention, in the video below.

Farewell John Walsh AO 04/07/2024

We've been saddened to hear of the recent death of John Walsh AO, one of the architects of the , at the age of 73.💐

A powerful and engaging presenter, John's expert opinion and lived experience were crucial in the Commission’s decision to recommend setting up the NDIS. John challenged leaders in the sector to focus on delivery of quality person-centred supports and the prevention of abuse.

NDS President Rohan Braddy has said, “It’s sad to hear of the passing of one of the architects of the NDIS. The Scheme was shaped by his professional expertise and lived experience; the reforms to come will carry forth his example and his philosophy.”

The disability sector has lost a great advocate for the NDIS and a tireless campaigner for the rights of people with disability, and all at NDS send their condolences and best wishes to John’s family.❤️

Yet again, the prices set by the go nowhere near to covering increases in the costs of running a well-managed service.

Our question is, do these prices signal the value of fair pay and safe employment conditions? Do they assume the importance of career pathways for their workers and investing in quality, safety and accountability?

Or are they the sign of a market where any provider will do?

NDIS pricing announcement fails participants and providers The Annual Pricing Review rise of 3.19 per cent is not enough to secure the continuity of supports for people with disability.

Government’s NDIS Annual Pricing Review ‘Ripping Off’ Australians with disability and disability services 28/06/2024

The 's Annual Pricing Review rise of 3.19 per cent announced today falls far short of what the sector needs, failing to cover rising operational costs and necessities like training and onboarding.

Everyone needs an NDIS that delivers value for money, meets its objectives and fulfils human rights - and yet again, the prices set by the NDIA go nowhere near to covering increases in the costs of running a well-managed service. 💸

We have been concerned for a long time about the NDIA’s incompetent approach to setting prices, and the only way forward is pricing that is independent, transparent, fair and accountable.

Congratulations to ✨Sherene Devanesen, the former CEO of provider Yooralla , who was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for a lifetime’s work in community health.

And ✨David Willersdorf’s contribution to Greater Dandenong was recognised with an AM, but we also recognise him for his years of involvement with support provider Wallara.

The Co-founder of the Global Alliance for Disability in Media, ✨Catia Malaquias, also received an OAM for service to people with disability, particularly her championing their greater and more positive representations in the media.

In WA, ✨Marion Hailes-McDonald, the Director for the Office of Disability, was recognised for her decade’s long service with the Public Service Medal.

In academia, Prof. ✨Elizabeth Kendall from Griffith University became a Member of the Order of Australia for her research in rehabilitation and disability.

And just like that, our Virtual Workforce Conference has come to a close. ✨
Today we had the privilege of hearing from industry experts Laurie Leigh, CEO of NDS, and Associate Professors Roxanna Pebdani and Justin Scanlan from the Centre for Disability Research at the University of Sydney.

They delved deep into the data released today in the Workforce Census Report and found:
➡️More employees were recruited, but turnover rates remain high.
➡️The cost of workforce turnover is not sustainable.
➡️Rates of employment of people with a disability in the sector remain low, but the survey responses may point to improvements.

Want the full scoop? Dive into the findings by accessing the Virtual Workforce Conference on-demand for the next 30 days! You'll also get a chance to look back on all the amazing presentations - that's almost 15 hours of quality content.

NDS Workforce Census Report finds entrenched disability workforce shortages 05/06/2024

📢 Member Exclusive 📢
NDS’s latest Workforce Census Report, released today, shows that the sector’s workforce recruitment and retention problems have not eased, with casual turnover continuing to increase – now at 24 per cent.

Providers face serious workforce pressures as they enter a long period of NDIS reform, with estimated sector costs of more than $80 million from staff turnover alone.

Launching the report at the NDS Workforce Virtual Conference today, NDS CEO Laurie Leigh said, “As we move into this period of sector reform, our latest survey shows that workforce shortages have become entrenched. Recruitment proved to be just as hard as last year, turnover is just as unsustainable, and there’s still no proper compensation in NDIS pricing for training and onboarding.”

More than 360 organisations responded to the survey covering 2023, representing around 67,000 disability support employees in the country.

The full report and key findings are available exclusively to NDS members.
