Enabling our energy - where do we get it? - time2talk 15/10/2021

Enabling our energy – where do we get it?

At the moment everyone is exhausted. In a marathon lock down, juggling home schooling, working from home and to many new ways of working.

Our conscious minds have geared up and are sucking the life out of us.

How can we get what is most precious at the moment – that extra bit of energy, the increased ability to get up again after so many knockdowns?

See this article on leading when you and your team are exhausted: https://hbr.org/2020/12/how-to-lead-when-your-team-is-exhausted-and-you-are-too

Here’s some tips!
Examine your sources of Energy; Physical, Mental Spiritual, Emotional. Rate yourself on a scale of 1 ( low) -10 (high) and work actively to build your energy in each area.

Spend time in the recovery zone. If we are always in Urgent we will burnout. Downtime is productive time (Loer and Shwartz, The Power of Full Engagement.

Rest reflect and reset- Look at Dr Adam Fraser's work on the 3rd space.

Block off time for you- self care is critical.

A well developed network of relationships can help us bounce back from setbacks. (HBR, 2020) Look at your relational sources of resilience Identify one area of connection that can help you be more resilient.

Ask for help. Many people are struggling at the moment. Be vulnerable, start the discussion and you may help someone else by modelling the right behaviour.

DO something that gives you energy. Favourite feelgood song, humour, have a dance, have a zoom with colleagues that is not task/work related.

Enabling our energy - where do we get it? - time2talk Enabling our energy - where do we get it? How do we lead when we are exhausted and our teams are too?

23/09/2021

Personally, I have always had so much gratitude for Melbourne, the place where I have lived most of my life. Safe, secure, mostly kind and with a sense of community. This time of year is a favourite of mine.

The instant blooming of the blossoms, the smell of spring in the air, the unbridled optimism of Melbournians who flock to the bay beaches on the first day the temp hits 20 degrees, even though it is still too cold to swim.

September kicks off a chain of exciting events. The AFL Grand final, Aussie barbies, Spring Carnival, Myer Chrissie Windows and the Aus Open.

A time of connection, getting together, having a laugh. All things that are precious to us and good for the soul.

The air feels different this year, and the protests of the last few days have been tough for all.

At the moment in our extended lockdown, with unrest in the streets and many of our nearest and dearest struggling, it is hard to muster up that unbridled optimism and sense of safety and security many of us have been blessed to have living in this fine state.

So the question is, are we anywhere near OK at the moment? Organisations like Beyond Blue and R U OK are experiencing alarmingly high call rates. Many of our clients with customer facing teams are experiencing aggressive behaviour, threats of self harm, and stories of struggle and hardship. This is all hard to take and even the most optimistic of us are finding it tough going.

We will be running a series of Mental Health Workshops on 8th October, leading up to World Mental Health Day (details below) with all proceeds going back to RUOK.

We will also offer a weekly discussion group on Zoom called “MIND your MENTAL HEALTH” for organisations to join in and share strategies, and discuss how they are managing this pandemic at this time.

We hope this offers some support, and would encourage those of you struggling to reach out and the attend the sessions on the 8th of October, or jump onto the weekly discussion group. Alternatively make sure those around you know there are plenty of places to seek support at this time.

Don’t stop believing! Hold onto that feeling! Hard to do when the record feels stuck! - time2talk 14/09/2021

Don’t stop believing!

Hold onto that feeling!

Hard to do when the record feels stuck!

time2talk tips4feelgood moments and how you and your teams can manage and navigate virtually.

Feeling at risk of showing my age for referencing the 1981 Journey song Don’t Stop Believing, although feeling some minor victory that vinyl is cool again.

For the past 18 months we have been holding onto a feeling that there will be a post COVID, lockdowns will finish and we will return to normal.

We have held onto the feeling yet every time we feel it's close it gets ripped away, just like a broken record we are stuck in a world that 2 years ago we would have never imagined.

Who feels like this now? (click below)

https://youtu.be/-G7b1zOhO_A

Yes, that was painful and lockdown continues to be painful for so many of us.

At time2talk Leadership we are receiving increased requests for sessions on fatigue, poor workplace behaviour, mental health, resilience, hybrid workplaces, self-care and some fun stuff!

In our many virtual sessions we are seeing participants open up and bravely talk about their struggles, searching for any tips and strategies that will help get them through.

As we sit in a space between RUOK day last week and World Mental Health Day October 10th, it’s time to raise the bar and ask ourselves are we doing enough for ourselves and others during this time.

This lockdown is harder for many reasons and the need to lift ourselves and others should be front and centre. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so leading up to World Mental Health Day it’s time to put yourself and others first and do whatever it takes to get some feelgood moments as we head to the home stretch.

So time2create some feelgood moments in your teams and organisations.

Here are some of the things we have tried:

tips4feelgood moments

1. In a virtual meeting ask your team to pop their favorite feelgood songs in chat. Keep a list and play them in meetings, returning from breakout rooms or whenever the team needs a lift.

2. Less people are taking sick leave – offer your team some proactive well being days, the only condition they must do something for themselves to recharge.

3. Work with your team on energy strategies to help with resilience and fatigue. Contact us for a summary of ides from the work of Loer and Shwartz.

4. Organise a team games session/trivia session on zoom. Be high on energy, create some healthy competition and include some getting to know you stuff.

5. Coffee catch ups – create a coffee club where team members are paired up and have to meet for either a walk and coffee or a zoom and coffee with another nominated team member ( maybe one they don’t normally do)

Are we there yet?! - time2talk 20/08/2021

As kids when our parents took us on a road trip we can all relate to the phrase “are we there yet?!”

As parent with kids you will have been on the receiving end from the back seat hearing incessantly “are we there yet?!”

Well for many this last lockdown feels like that, more wide spread, more severe and the goalposts have moved again. In the old days on a long car ride we would have played eye spy, sweet and sour, Simon says.

In more recent times the kids would focus on their DS, Nintendos, iPads/phones. Whatever distracts us from the long journey that seems never ending is worth giving a try.

Through this lockdown we have offered lunch and learns which have been well attended and focused on topics to help you through this challenging time.

We have seen some organisations set up team activity sessions such as trivia, tools down and game sessions on Zoom.

A little laughter can make the journey shorter.

A professional actor, streaming in from Melbourne playing the part of a poor leader causing chaos in a leadership team.

A regional facilitator, on the ground managing the group while secretly attempting to add more disorder to the room.

A leadership group, making party hats and paper chains, experiencing firsthand how easily a team can move through the stages of team development and land right into the storming stage, if they are not led in the right way.

Welcome to experiential learning, the hybrid way. After the activity had ended, a debrief was conducted by 2 highly skilled facilitators – Bern Jones and Ian Rose with the leadership group who were walking in the shoes of their teams.

There was lots of laughter and learning, with a little angst and stress, but all for the sake of growing the participant’s capability as leaders.
Whilst not liking COVID, we are loving the variety and opportunities that we now have available to mix up our delivery and methodologies.

Whether virtual, face to face, or a combination of both, we have come a long way in the past 15 months.
