Use the guide that the school has on hand as a guide not gospel, buying the lowest end / cheapest laptop will not end well specially for kids in high school. Remember they need to carry them so 15.6" is not necessarily the best size - 13.3" or 14" are much better, fit in a school bag & usually much lighter. Touch screens are great but are very expensive to replace when broken. If you child is a klutz, consider 2nd hand cause you'll most likely replace it fairly often. There is virtually zero options in upgrading a laptop or tablet after purchase so if you can spend a little more at the time of purchase to get longevity, do it so you won't regret it later.
