ONLINE SAFETY MESSAGE FROM QPS
Most students have unprecedented access to technology, including smartphones and the internet. While these tools offer educational opportunities and ways to connect with their peers, they also present risks.
Ensuring students’ safety online requires educating them about responsible digital behaviour, particularly the importance of not sharing intimate images and offensive or harassing conduct.
Division 474 of the Criminal Code defines offences that utilise "a carriage service". This can include sending material using a mobile service, such as calls or text messages, the Internet, social media, and email services.
Examples of potential criminal acts using a carriage service include:
• Sending unsolicited material that could be deemed offensive.
• Sending abusive or rude texts over the phone or social media.
• Sending graphic or violent images or videos.
Police want to remind students about the importance of respectful and appropriate communication. Do not send inappropriate images, videos, or content, even if intended as a joke. The person who receives it may find it offensive or upsetting.
Intimate images, sometimes referred to as ‘Nudes’ or ‘sexting’, if taken and distributed by children under 16 years of age, could be considered Child Exploitation Material, and as such are serious offences.
Further, the sharing of consensual images without a person’s consent is a criminal matter. In Queensland, it is a criminal offence if a person shares an intimate image of another person without their consent in a way that would reasonably cause them distress. It is also illegal if a person threatens to share an intimate image without the person’s consent in a way that would cause them fear of the threat being carried out. This applies whether a person threatens the person depicted in the intimate image, or anyone else. This offence applies even if the image does not exist.
It's essential to understand that committing any of these offences is not a trivial matter. These outcomes can have a profound and lasting impact on your future.
If you receive unwanted images or messages from someone and do not know what to do, remember you have options:
• Being pressured to send nudes or get sexual online is never OK.
• Only communicate with friends you have met face to face and ones who respect your boundaries
• It’s OK to block and report a message that make you feel uncomfortable.
• Talk to someone at the school, parents, family, friends or police.
Remember that nothing is so bad that you cannot tell someone.
Visit the eSafety Commissioner for more information, support and reporting options www.esafety.gov.au
Parents, guardians, and educators should engage children in open and honest discussions about the potential dangers of sharing intimate images and the importance of treating others with respect online. By educating them about the risks and fostering responsible online behaviour, we can help ensure that they enjoy the benefits of the internet and smartphones safely.
