P is for Plaque.
Dental plaque is a biofilm that forms on teeth, consisting of a complex blend of bacteria, saliva, food particles, proteins, and polysaccharides. Bacteria, particularly Streptococcus mutans, thrive on sugars and starches from the diet, producing acids as byproducts. These acids, combined with proteins and polysaccharides, create a sticky matrix that adheres the plaque to tooth surfaces π¦·
If not diligently removed through regular brushing and flossing, plaque can lead to the development of cavities and gum disease π Over time, plaque can mineralize into tartar, a hard deposit that requires professional removal. This means that effective oral hygiene practices play a crucial role in preventing the accumulation of dental plaque and maintaining optimal oral health πͺ₯
Teeth can be annoying π«π¦· They have nerves within them that help us know when they are at threat. For example, they give us feedback so we don't bite into food too hard.
But most dental issues, such as tooth decay, don't actually trigger a pain response until they have progressed to the point where they might even be irreparable! π¦ So your best safeguard against tooth pain is to make sure we can check your teeth to pick up on small issues before the teeth start hurting.
O is for Orthodontist.
An orthodontist is a specialized dental professional with expertise in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of dental and facial irregularities.
Through advanced education and training, orthodontists acquire the skills necessary for the design, application, and management of orthodontic appliances, including braces, aligners, and retainers. Their primary focus is on addressing malocclusions, or improper bites, and achieving optimal alignment of teeth and jaws. This discipline goes beyond cosmetic enhancements, encompassing functional improvements that contribute to overall oral health.
By meticulously crafting treatment plans, orthodontists play a crucial role in fostering proper dental alignment and facial aesthetics. π
As we age, the importance of oral health becomes increasingly significant, influencing our ability to eat, speak, and socialize comfortably.
Beyond the conventional concerns like cavities and gum disease, geriatric dental care addresses unique challenges such as dry mouth, which is a common side effect of many medications taken by older adults. Additionally, conditions like arthritis may impact one's ability to brush and floss effectively.
Regular dental check-ups for seniors not only help prevent dental issues, but can also contribute to the early detection of systemic conditions like diabetes or osteoporosis, which may manifest oral symptoms. The integration of compassionate and comprehensive geriatric dental care ensures that seniors can enjoy a higher quality of life with a healthy and functional smile, promoting overall health and confidence in their golden years.
We provide dental care to everyone, including seniors, and offer disability parking onsite for those with mobility issues.
N is for Nerveβ‘
Ever wondered why a toothache hurts so much? βΉοΈ The oral cavity, including the mouth, gums, and teeth, is rich in nerve endings, and it can be more sensitive compared to many other parts of the body. The high density of nerves in the mouth serves several functions, including the perception of taste, temperature, and touch, as well as the ability to detect pain and pressure.
The tongue π
is also densely packed with taste buds and sensory receptors, making it a highly sensitive organ. Additionally, the teeth and gums π¦· are supplied with nerves that can detect sensations such as hot and cold temperatures, pressure, and pain.
Dictionary
β¨TEETH WHITENINGβ¨
We underestimate the value of a smile. It not only boosts the mood of the people around us, but it also boosts our inner self-worth. Often stained or dark teeth can leave you feeling embarrassed and prevent you from smiling.
Stains on teeth from red wine, tea, coffee or smoking can be simply removed with regular professional cleaning using specialised instruments and pastes. For more stubborn stains or yellow teeth, teeth whitening can be the perfect solution.
We offer two types of tooth whitening solutions: take home tooth whitening trays and in-office power whitening. Both solutions are safe, effective and affordable. None of our products will strip your teeth of their enamel or cause any damage.
Whitening is suitable for most people, but can be detrimental in mouths with tooth decay, lots of fillings or gum disease. A thorough examination will need to be carried out before you have your teeth whitened to ensure the safe delivery of your whitening products.
M is for Mouthwash.
Are mouth rinses worthwhile? The short answer is... NO!
If you brush and floss your teeth, there is no evidence to suggest that mouth rinses will help at all. If you don't brush or floss, mouth rinses might help to freshen your breath, but won't help to prevent cavities and gum disease.
Our advice is: save your money, and buy toothpaste instead.
Guess who is back...?!
Liv! π
We're thrilled to have Liv back on the front desk after a few months away!
L is for Lips π
Lips play a crucial role in framing the mouth and are integral to facial aesthetics.
Comprising delicate tissues and muscles, lips not only define the outer boundary of the oral cavity, but also contribute to facial expressions, communication, and overall facial harmony.
Sometimes, the solution for a good smile is not to touch the teeth at all, but to focus on framing it!
ANZAC DAY
We are closed today to remember those who served our country.
We will reopen tomorrow (Friday, 26 April 2024).
K is for Kids' teeth!
Kids' teeth are like architectural placeholders for their adult smiles. Beyond their immediate function, these 'primary' or 'baby' teeth guide the proper alignment and spacing for the permanent teeth that will follow. Losing a baby tooth prematurely can disrupt this natural progression, potentially leading to alignment issues.
Therefore, caring for kids' teeth isn't just about their current health; it's an investment in the future of their adult smile. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene habits play a vital role in ensuring a seamless transition from primary to permanent teeth.
Meet Kayla!
Kayla moved to Australia from Canada a year ago, and has never looked back. Kayla brings endless positivity and smiles to our dental assisting team.
Make sure you say hi next time you're in!
J is for Jaw.
The term "jaw" refers to either of the two bony structures that frame the mouth and hold the teeth. The upper jaw, known as the maxilla, is fixed and does not move, while the lower jaw, called the mandible, is movable and plays a crucial role in activities such as speaking and chewing. The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect the jawbone to the skull and facilitate these movements.
Jaw joints are unresearched, meaning we don't know a lot about how to fix them. What we do know is that stress is making the prevalence of jaw problems much more common. π
π° Happy Easter π°
We will be closed to eat chocolate over the Easter weekend π«
We will resume normal trading at 8am on Tuesday, 2 April.
I is for... implants.
Often the best replacement for a missing tooth, dental implants are cutting-edge tooth replacement solutions that mimic the structure and function of natural teeth π¦·
Consisting of a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, implants provide a sturdy foundation for the attachment of lifelike prosthetic teeth. Over time, the jawbone fuses with the implant through a process called osseointegration, ensuring exceptional stability and preventing bone loss. This remarkable technology not only restores the aesthetics of a complete smile but also allows for comfortable chewing and speech.
Dental implants are a long-lasting and reliable option, offering a transformative solution for individuals seeking a permanent and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth. Whether replacing a single tooth, multiple teeth, or supporting dentures, dental implants provide a comprehensive and durable dental restoration π

H is for Halitosis... aka bad breath!
Say goodbye to bad breath, because we're unraveling the mystery of halitosis! π¬οΈβ¨
Halitosis, or persistent bad breath, can be conquered with a few simple steps. Elevate your oral hygiene game by brushing, flossing, and don't forget your tongue. Stay hydrated to keep your mouth refreshed, choose breath-friendly foods, and consider swapping that coffee for green or black tea. Steer clear of smoking, a notorious bad breath contributor, and make regular dental check-ups your ally in detecting and addressing any underlying issues. Fresh breath is within reach β conquer halitosis and let your confident smile take center stage! ππΏ

G is for Gingiva... AKA gums.
Your gums should not bleed when you brush. Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of plaque - a sticky film of bacteria - on your teeth. Other potential causes of bleeding gums include using a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard, aggressive brushing, or underlying health issues.
It's essential to pay attention to any bleeding and address it promptly. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush gently, and maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine that includes regular flossing. If bleeding persists or is a recurring issue, it's advisable to consult with a dentist to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate guidance for maintaining optimal oral health.

F is for filling! π¦·
Most people think that dental fillings are "silver" bullets to fix all tooth-problems. While this is true to some extent, a filling placed in a heavily broken down tooth or used to fix a really big cavity may end up being more like a "rusty" bullet. It's so important for us to understand how a particular tooth became defective, so we can offer solutions that will stand the test of time.

E is for Enamel!
π¦·β¨ Did you know? Your enamel is like a precious gem β unique and irreplaceable! Unlike other parts of your body, enamel doesn't have the superpower of regeneration. Once it's gone, it's gone! So, let's cherish and protect that enamel with good oral care habits ππ
π€ Swiftie Shenanigans Alert! π

D is for Denture π
Did you know that George Washington, the first President of the United States, had dentures? Contrary to popular belief, his dentures weren't made of wood but rather a combination of materials like ivory, human and animal teeth, and metal springs. Dental technology has certainly come a long way since then, ensuring today's dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking π¦·β¨
π Fun Tips for Sparkling Smiles! β¨
Encouraging your little ones to brush their teeth can be an adventure in itself. Here are some magical tips to turn tooth brushing into a joyous ritual:
1. Make it a Game: Turn brushing into a challenge! Set a timer and see if they can brush for the entire two minutes. Time flies when you're having fun!
2. Superhero Brushes: Let them choose a toothbrush with their favorite superhero or cartoon character. It's amazing how much more exciting brushing becomes with a trusty sidekick!
3. Toothpaste Variety: Explore different flavors of toothpaste. Watermelon, strawberry, or bubblegum β let them pick a flavor that adds a burst of excitement to their routine.
4. Brush Together: Lead by example! Brush your teeth together, turning it into a family affair. It's not just a task; it's a shared experience.
5. Sing Along: Create a tooth brushing playlist with their favorite tunes. Two minutes of brushing can feel like a concert when accompanied by their beloved songs! Remember, a positive attitude makes all the difference.

B is for bridges
π The concept of bridging gaps in smiles dates back to ancient times, with civilizations using materials like animal teeth and bone to create rudimentary bridges. Fast forward to the 20th century, and the art of smile restoration took a leap with the development of modern dental bridges. Today, we combine advanced materials and techniques to seamlessly bridge the gaps between your teeth πβ¨

Our Story
Northside Dental Solutions was established with a vision to change the way dentistry is done in Australia. We are breaking down the barriers to dental care making it easy for you to maintain or restore your dental health.
We have made dentistry affordable, without compromising on quality. We strive to treat patients with respect, empathy and compassion. We relish the opportunity to make nervous patients comfortable and endeavour to change the way these patients view dentistry. We want to enable the community of North Brisbane to achieve better health. We want to help you now, and equip you with the skills to to help yourself in the future.
For too long, dentistry in Australia has been the elephant in the room. We all want better teeth and gums, yet there are many barriers. Treatment is either too expensive, too confusing or too scary. We understand and are here to help.
We know that dentistry has always been expensive in Australia. Very few have access to Queensland Health dental services and the cost of delivering safe, quality dental care privately is expensive. We have negotiated deals with our local suppliers and labs to enable us to reduce our prices, allowing people to access the dentistry they need. We offer interest-free payment plans so that you can get the treatment you need now, before it is too late. We also offer dental care plans for patients wanting to budget for their health in the long term.
