Many years ago when I was President of the Alfred Cove Art Society in Perth, our demonstrator for the month was to be Drewfus Gates. An extremely talented and experienced artist.
Drewfus was coming to do a portrait demonstration. A name was pulled out of a hat of the members attending that night and my name was selected. Being president I declined and offered a redraw but everyone insisted I was to be the model for the night.
I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to watch Drewfus at work!
We had a fun evening and for once in my life I sat quietly without talking (those who know me know that this is not my natural state!)
The evening went well and afterwards the attendees chatted vigorously with Drewfus.
After everyone left Drewfus signed the painting and generously gifted it to me. I was absolutely honoured and delighted!
Thank you Drewfus, I am forever grateful and treasure your painting.
The painting now resides in my home studio silently keeping watch....

Artist Statement: "The magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) native to Australia and southern New Guinea has been recorded living to the age of 21 years. It is an accomplished songbird, boasting an array of complex vocalizations. They can mimic over 35 species of birds, dogs, horses, human speech, and environmental sounds like emergency vehicles. My inspiration comes from constant observation of the wonderful bird life that surrounds us, many of which have adapted to urbanization. There is something so appealing to me about objects that no longer have a use but hold so much history. A 1952 Austin truck was the perfect choice for ‘The Landing Party’."
