Baby Magic Club

Baby Magic Club

A private mothercraft service in the Mid North Coast, NSW, helping parents with their newborns.

Baby Magic developed over the past 30 years from my experience of working as a Midwife, Community Midwife, Lactation Consultant and Early Childhood Nurse. I have run baby clinics in the local Port Macquarie area for the past 20 years and I was constantly approached by mothers that were so sleep deprived they became tearful when telling me what their days and nights were like. Today is International Day of the Midwife; a day to thank and recognise midwives for the incredible work they do every day, working with women and families on their life-changing journey to parenthood.

Every woman needs a midwife. There are 300,000 births in Australia every year and a midwife is a part of every one of these journeys to parenthood, day and night. Midwives are by a woman’s side.

Let’s celebrate these healthcare professionals who have a significant positive health impact on mothers, families and the long-term health of both mum (and partner) and our newest Australians.

ANZAC DAY We Remember 🌺
Given The Royal Society for the Welfare of Mothers & Babies (Tresillian) was established just after World War 1, many of our Tresillian Nurses were also part of the war effort.

One of those was Nancy Craig, whose story is remarkable. She worked at the Randwick Military Hospital from 1916 before departing by ship to Egypt to serve her country. After suffering health issues from seeing hundreds die on the front line, she returned to Sydney in 1923 as a decorated Officer. She undertook training at Tresillian in Petersham before an appointment to Broken Hill Baby Health Centres as ‘Sister-in-Charge’.

At the time, there were no benefits or support for war veterans, so Nancy had no option but to return to nursing despite extreme health issues.

Anzac Day 🌺 is a timely reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by Nurses in times of need.

Regular monitoring of your baby's physical growth provides a record of the amazing physical growth that occurs during the first year of life.

👉 Weight is the most commonly used measure of growth and health.

💡Avoid being too focused on the weight of your baby. Weight is only one measure of health.

How to promote positive behaviours in toddlers 🙌

When guiding toddlers, it's important that we use positive behaviour management techniques, such as praise, rewards, and gentle redirection. Not only does this help foster a nurturing and loving relationship but it helps them learn essential life skills like self-control, empathy, and problem-solving.

If your baby is very young, or you’re not feeling confident about bathing your baby, here are our top tips:

→ Avoid using soap on your baby's face - warm water is fine.

→ You can use a clean soft washer or cotton ball moistened with clean warm water.

→ Start with your baby’s eyes, wiping from the inside corner to the outside of the eye.

→ Use a different part of the washer for each eye or a new damp cotton ball.

→ Wipe gently around each nostril (but don’t poke anything up there)

→ Wipe gently around each ear, and don’t forget behind the ears as this can become crusty and red.

→ Wipe your baby’s chin, neck armpits, arm and leg creases and groin creases. You will be surprised what gets caught in there! Make sure to dry these creases gently but thoroughly behind the ears; bacteria grow in moist, warm areas.

Cradle cap is a build up of thick pale, yellowish oily scale on the scalp, due to excess serum production.

To treat:
→ Wash and massage your baby’s head regularly using a mild soap.
→ After bathing, use the flats of your fingertips to apply an edible oil, such as olive or almond oil, and stimulate your baby’s scalp by using a soft baby brush.

Playing with and talking to your baby is important for their development 🧠

Top tips from Explore & Develop
1. You’re the best play object your baby can have.
2. Always supervise them closely, especially around water and climbing equipment.
3. As your baby gets older, playing with other babies and toddlers teaches them social skills.

Understanding sleep and wake cycles 💤

During a sleep cycle, your baby will move through active sleep to quiet sleep and then back to active sleep. This is known as a sleep cycle.

Baby’s sleep cycles change as they grow. For example a newborn baby’s sleep cycle is very short but by 4 months baby’s sleep cycle will last between 45 and 50 minutes.

At the end of each sleep cycle, your child will move to another or to a drowsy state of consciousness.

If left undisturbed during the drowsy transitional state, they may wake or even go back to sleep again.

This is mismatched with adults who have a 90-minute sleep cycle 😴
