This is the time of year that termites fly from the nest to make another colony. look out for what looks like a flying ant, but there is a difference. A swam of termites went through on the south west breeze near the top of the hill at Nicol Road Wednesday morning.
Also known as alates or reproductive stage termites, flying male and female alates emerge from existing colonies to mate and form new nests elsewhere. A flying termite swarm near the home nest could indicate a large colony in the yard or some other nearby location.
While both species have four wings, termite wings are uniform in size. Winged ants have noticeably larger wings in the front than the pair in the back. Termites antennae are almost straight where the ant's antennae is elbowed. Termite wings are twice as long as their body.
The best guard against these alates is to have a residual repellent spray to exterior walls, eaves, fences, patios and paths so when they land on these surfaces they will die before they can travel underground to mate and start a colony.
If you find termites (alates) near your home give me a call to discuss options. Steve 0418943067

This time of the year rats will use the top of fences to access the neighbouring properties to get access to fruit trees for a mid night snack. Rat bait stations at the top of the fence line will help eliminate these rats. These rat bait stations are lockable and should remain permanently in place filled with rat/mice bait. Picture shows a new bait station fitted to top of fence, the baits inside have been gnawed by rats so no doubt it will do the job.

At this time of the year, with the cold nights and rain setting in the rats are looking for a warm dry location to set up their breading nests. Rats will be moving into your roof spaces to nest, you may be hearing them scurrying around the ceiling already. Rat bait stations at the top of the fence line will help eliminate these rats as they move from feeding grounds at fruit trees to the roof space. These rat bait stations are lockable and should remain permanently in place filled with rat/mice bait. Picture shows a new bait station fitted to top of fence, the baits inside have been gnawed by rats so no doubt it will do the job.

The weather is warming and the ants are locating to your lawns and paths. The small ants will undermine the path and eventually kill the lawn. Once these ants saturate the yard they can move into the house walls and nest, the nearest food and water source will then be the pantry and kitchen area. Its cheaper and quicker to eliminate them from the yard before they move inside the house. Call me for a free quote on professional work. Steve 0418943067

Palm tree borers, if you are finding very fine powdered wood around the base of your palm this is called frass and is the ejected wood from the palm deposited by the palm borer larva. There are many different types of borers ranging in sizes from 1mm to 5mm. These borers will weaken and cause substantial damage to your palm without early intervention. These effected palms can be treated.

Rats are invading our back yards and roof spaces. In these cold and damp conditions rats will move from the palm trees and into the warmth of your roof spaces, you may be able to hear them at night. They will have nests in the warmth of your roof space and get water from the rain left in your gutters. A common form of travel from your roof space to their food source is along the fence lines to the neighbours fruit trees. Fitting rat bait stations on the fence line where the rats travel is a good perminant control method. Over 1000 rats can breed from a single pair in 1 year. Call me for a free quote. The small black house ant and the small brown coastal ants can invade and saturate your back yard and patio, signs are small sand mounds. Beneath each group of mounds will be a reproductive queen laying more eggs. At the point of outside saturation the ants can move into the walls of your house and make nests anywhere in side the house. Treatment while the ants are in small numbers outside is by far easier and cheaper in the long run. For free quote call Steve 0418943067
