The allure of β€œornamental” yoga, characterized by its emphasis on superficial aesthetics rather than mindful movement, can lure practitioners into pushing their bodies beyond safe limits. Without the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor, practitioners may lack the awareness necessary to recognize their body's warning signs of overexertion and injury.

Repeatedly performing poses incorrectly or forcing oneself into advanced postures without adequate preparation can gradually wear down joints and increase the risk of chronic issues such as tendonitis, muscle imbalances, and even stress fractures. Moreover, the lack of emphasis on breath control and mindfulness in superficial yoga can exacerbate the risk of injury by disconnecting practitioners from their body's signals.

Injuries incurred from superficial, uncontrolled yoga may not manifest immediately but can accumulate over years of practice, hindering mobility, causing chronic pain, and impeding one's overall quality of life.

Therefore, it's crucial for practitioners to prioritize proper alignment, mindfulness, and seeking guidance from qualified instructors to ensure a safe and sustainable yoga practice.

The core is the group of trunk and hip muscles that surround the spine, abdominal viscera and hip. Core muscles are essential for proper load balance within the spine, pelvis, and kinetic chain. They spare the spine from excessive load and are essential for lad transfer between the upper and lower body.

Benefits to having a strong core:
β€’ Prevent back pain
β€’ Increase flexibility
β€’ Proper posture
β€’ Improve balance
β€’ Prevent incontinence

On the mat, your body weight provides resistance against gravity, making the workout more challenging in many cases. You must be in full control of your body, rather than relying on the assistance or support of the springs and cables of an apparatus. Mat work is a great option for any body because of its emphasis on learning how to control your muscles during exercises.

Advanced mat classes are the hardest because you’re using your body all the time, the reformer isn’t there assisting or supporting you. While doing Pilates on a mat instead of a Reformer may not seem as exciting or challenging, many clients see results (improved strength, posture, agility, flexibility, toned muscles) within just a few mat sessions.

I love how the industrial features like the exposed brick walls give the space an urban edge, yet it doesn't feel overwhelming at all. Instead, it feels surprisingly peaceful, almost like a sanctuary where creativity can flourish.

The airy feel of the studio is fantastic too, thanks to all the natural light pouring in through those big windows. It's amazing how just being in this space can instantly put you in a positive frame of mind.

Pilates: Embracing the Core of Strength

Picture this: the soft hum of peaceful music, the gentle guidance of your breath, and the subtle yet profound engagement of your core muscles. That's the essence of Pilates for me. It's not just about toning muscles or achieving physical fitness goals; it's about finding strength from within, both physically and mentally.

Joseph Pilates, the visionary behind this practice, understood the power of mindful movement. Every exercise, every breath, is an opportunity to connect deeper with ourselves, to cultivate grace and resilience in our bodies and minds. It's a journey of precision, control, and fluidity, guiding us towards better posture, flexibility, and overall well-being.

Trust your intuition; if a practice or instructor resonates with your soul, dive in wholeheartedly. Your journey is unique, and finding the right guidance can make all the difference.

Turn on your bodies air-con with sh*tali pranayama, the cooling breath.

Here's how you can practice it:
1. Sit comfortably: Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. You can sit on the floor with your legs crossed or in a chair with your feet flat on the ground.
2. Relax your body: Sit with a straight spine and relax your shoulders. Place your hands on your knees, palms facing up, in a relaxed and comfortable position.
3. Open your mouth: Open your mouth and form an "O" shape with your lips.
4. Extend your tongue: Extend your tongue out and curl the sides of the tongue up. If you can't curl your tongue, you can simply part your lips slightly.
5. Inhale through the mouth: Inhale slowly and deeply through the mouth, feeling the cool air as it passes over your curled tongue.
6. Close your mouth: After a full inhalation, close your mouth and exhale through your nose.
7. Repeat: Continue this cycle for several breaths. You can start with 5-10 breaths and gradually increase as you become more comfortable.
This pranayama is has a cooling and calming effect on the nervous system and can help reduce body temperature. It's especially beneficial during hot weather or if you're feeling overheated.
