Linen is a gorgeous fabric for lampshades - here showing off the beautiful weave as the light shines through the lampshade backing.
It can be a bit tricky to work with, especially on an empire shade, as Alana found out with this little project. The panel shape is curved and so this loose-weave linen has a tendency to fray a lot. But hasn’t Alana done well recreating the original lampshade shape on her pre-loved base?!
If you are just starting off on the path of lampshade making, we recommend to use a medium weight cotton such as quilting cotton. That’s usually tightly woven and therefore won’t fray quite so bad.
For those of you who want to tackle linen or any other loosely woven fabric such as hessian, there is help for dealing with the fraying… Stay tuned as we will reveal this little trick soon.
Oh, the joy at the end of our workshops makes my heart sing... It is always such a beautiful moment when our participants proudly realise what they have created is a pretty professional looking lampshade and they made it with their own hands in one morning.
And isn’t this a beautiful lampshade?! The lovely Prue followed along the four basic steps:
1. Iron the fabric and prepare your panel
2. Prepare your ring set by winding the cotton tape around
3. Create the structure of your frame by pe***ng the panel to the rings
4. Finish off by tucking in the fabric around your shade
A fun little morning project!
Packing orders in the beautiful winter sun today… Big thanks to all you lovely people for supporting our small cottage business every week!

Hello there! After 14 incredible years building 3Chooks, teaching hundreds of you to make lampshades and being the joyful face behind the business, spoiling the people around her with her infectious smile, my lovely friend Anna is moving on to new ventures - teaching permaculture principles to kids and adults and organising the Central Coast Edible Garden Trail. HACK : I’m super excited to share this hack. It came to me one night in the early hours and I must say, it’s bloody brilliant. Check out my latest blog/news post to learn how to make tiered lampshades using just regular lampshade rings. Link in bio 💡
A lovely message from Rhonda: “Thank you so much, this product is fantastic & so easy to use this lamp was damaged in a move and now it’s brand new again, and it was so quick to replace” Isn’t this fabric fun too with the wooly bits!
A lovely lamp with a great little story. 3Chooks newbie Lucy decided to give lampshade making a try when she came across this cute cane base she found in a council clean up pile. When Lucy sent this shot through my heart skipped a beat because I had just finished making some long cushions for our bench seats with the very same fabric (2nd photo)! Such serendipity!!
A gorgeous selection of lamps made by 3Chooks customers! I couldn’t be prouder! #1 by Lyn - after a couple of hiccups Lyn is ‘tickled pink’ with the result. #’s 2 3 4 & 5 by who has systematically fixed up all her old lamps and said “Am really enjoying fixing all these broken lamps, thank you so much esp for the video tutorial, it is the best” Aw thanks Chelsey! #’s 6 & 7 are Edwina’s beautiful gooseneck lamp. I have such a soft spot for gooseneck! #8 is Laura’s stunning macrame pendant. What beautiful workmanship! Laura started off making for friends and recently send off a macrame shade to the USA. Get in touch if you’d like to see more of Laura’s work, I can PM her details. #9 by Lisa - such a pretty fabric with the layered red and white screens, not sure who designed it, anyone know? #10 by Sean who waited ever so patiently for his custom rings and his shade turned out beautifully! Thank you everyone for sharing! Please tag yourself in if you’d like people to see more of your goodies 🥰
Some very pretty lampshades made by my lovely students at on Saturday
An awesome creation from maker Trish, thank you so much for sharing !

Just wanted to share with you my lamp. I’m also a big believer in upcycling, reusing and reloving. I found this funky base at an op shop for my daughter who’s wanting to do up her apartment in a 70’s vibe. The shade, I pulled apart to use the rings, was something my sister was getting rid of and with your online instructional video and lampshade paper this is the result.

Happy International Women’s Day - Let’s all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. Let’s create an inclusive world together.
The last few days I've received some lovely emails from 3Chooks makers and I'd love to share some of their photos with you too. Edwina made this pair of gooseneck shades and said "Thank you for the kit. It was fabulous!" ....thank you Edwina, gosh I love goosenecks! Lisa came along to my workshops at on the weekend and made this sweet pinky /red linen shade, it looks so gorgeous in its forever home Lisa! And Lana said "I made this with my 3Chooks Lampshade Making goodies" She has been super busy making the floral drum, the k-pow cartoon empire shade and the protea rectangular shade. I love that you have been re-using frames you already have Lana. Thanks so much for sharing everybody. Happy lampshade making!
