If you are wondering about tactile health and massage, here's a basic outline of the different modalities and what you might see one of the specialists for.

Chiropractor: A chiropractor views the workings of the body through the musculoskeletal system (particularly the spine and joints). They are trained to take and read x-rays and spot the signs of injury/trauma to the skeletal system, and will regularly use them in diagnosis. Chiropractors use swift manipulation (adjustment) of joints to realign the body and are known for"cracking" the joints, but many do employ gentler techniques like soft tissue work and mobililsations. Chiropractic treatment is useful for postural problems or treatment of neck/back pain and headaches associated with spinal misalignment.

Osteopath: An osteopath tends to look at the biomechanics of the entire body (not just the musculoskeletal systems) to discover the underlying cause of pain. Many of the techniques used are the same as a chiropractor (such as adjustments and mobilisations), but also commonly includes soft tissue work, dry needling, stretching, pressure, mobilisations, Craniosacral Therapy and adjustments. They will also likely give you stretches or strengthening exercises to do at home. Osteopaths are helpful for back and neck pain, joint pain and arthritis, headaches, sciatica, sports injuries, tendonitis, repetitive strain injuries (RSI), and some respiratory and digestive disorders.

Physiotherapist: Physiotherapists have very broad-based training in order to treat a huge range of injuries, conditions and disorders. Their aim is to restore proper function and mobility following an injury, surgery, trauma or health condition, which is why you will often find them in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. It therefore may be worthwhile finding a physio who specialises in your particular area of need (e.g. back pain). They employ those manual techniques used by osteos and chiropractors, but additionally include exercise and pilates, strapping/taping, use of heat and cold, electrotherapy, and providing corrective equipment where needed.

Ultimately, some of these minor differences matter far less than you receiving effective treatment from a trusted professional who understands your health history and needs, and with whom you have an agreed treatment plan. If a professional or their modality doesn't work for you, move on until you find the right fit.

Since the famous Slip, Slop, Slap! Campaign of the 80s, Australians are far more aware of the risks of too much sun exposure. Yet we still have one of the highest national rates of skin cancer in the world, with 2 out of 3 of us developing skin cancer by the age of 70.

As manual therapists and beauty professionals, we are in a unique position to help in the fight against skin cancer. Every day we work on clients' bodies, usually viewing and palpating large areas of exposed skin as part of the treatments we provide, and we have a prime opportunity to find suspicious lesions or moles, particularly on the posterior surface - a tricky spot for anyone to properly view themselves.

This handy poster from the Cancer Council provides some helpful pictures and descriptions of what to look out for.

It's also helpful to remember the "ABCDE Rule" to help spot potential Melanoma - the most aggressive and dangerous form of skin cancer.
• A= asymmetry, look for spots that are asymmetrical not round
• B= border, look for spots with uneven borders
• C= colour, look for spots with an unusual or uneven colour
• D= diameter, look for spots that are larger than 7 mm
• E= evolution, look for changes over time

See something suspicious? Here's how to tell your client.
• DO wait until the end of the appointment; once your client is dressed and you are talking face to face. To do so during the appointment can make the client feel vulnerable and prove to be a major distraction for the rest of the treatment.
• DO keep your tone light and calm -- you don't want to unnecessarily alarm your client by sounding sombre or worried.
• DO NOT make a diagnosis - If a mole or lesion appears as suspicious you are to refer the client to a doctor or skin specialist for diagnosis, as attempting to diagnose is outside boundaries of our professional knowledge.

Finding skin cancer early is the best way to ensure it can be treated with success. It may mean the difference between life and death, so be prepared, and on the lookout!
