😱What was missed?!

👉🏼On occasion, Orthotics Plus will intervene in cases of Lisfranc/midfoot fractures. These can be misdiagnosed as a severe sprain, mismanaged or even just missed. If a Lisfranc injury is not treated appropriately, damage can occur to the cartilage. This then increases stress on joints of the midfoot, resulting in severe flat foot and midfoot arthritis without resolution. Not a great patient outcome!🥴🔥

🦶🏼Lisfranc injuries occur when the bones of the midfoot are separated from the bones of the forefoot (metatarsals), particularly around the 1st and 2nd metatarsals. This injury can range from simple to complex, depending on how many joints of the foot are involved.

😟This 31 year old patient fell on her right foot whilst playing badminton. She presented to her local doctor 5 days post injury, however a standard X-ray showed no fracture. She was then referred to us for a CAM walker for pain relief. The patient presented to us with pain, moderate swelling, some plantar bruising and difficulty weight-bearing.

🤔When taking into consideration the mechanism of injury (extreme plantar flexion under axial load) and presentation of symptoms, we suggested a Lisfranc injury needed to be considered and recommended that she seek an orthopaedic opinion for further management.

🧡After a weight-bearing CT and X-ray showed widening at the Lisfranc complex, the patient underwent surgical fixation and was advised to be non weight-bearing for 6 weeks. 6 weeks post-op, we then fitted her with an Aircast boot in which she was able to weight-bear for another 6 weeks. At 12 weeks post-op we transitioned her to appropriate shoes and foot orthotics, and at 6 months her metalware was removed.👌🏼

👋🏽Say hi to Anic Tilbury!

👩🏼‍⚕️Anic is an orthotist who firmly believes in the importance of active listening when working with patients. She understands that patients hold valuable insights, and by truly listening to them, she can provide the best support and care.

🦵🏽Anic is deeply intrigued by the science behind her profession, particularly the biomechanics of human joints. This drives her to continually learn and understand how to optimise support for her patients. Anic has a strong interest in computer aided design and 3D printing.

🧡What sets Anic apart is her genuine care for her patients and their outcomes. This concern motivates her to constantly strive for improvement as an orthotist.

🧵 Outside of work, Anic finds joy in being in nature, having a fondness for animals. She is also a passionate seamstress, often making her own clothes, which complements her orthotics work very well with repairing and manufacturing soft goods!

💔A humeral fracture is an injury to the upper part of the arm, between the elbow and shoulder and generally occurs as a result of falling on an outstretched arm or directly onto the humerus. Symptoms may include pain, swelling and bruising.

🦴Humeral fractures are generally divided into three categories:

💪🏽Proximal humeral fracture which occurs near the shoulder joint and may affect the rotator cuff tendons of the shoulder joint (most commonly seen in older patients with osteoporotic bone)

💪🏿Mid-shaft humeral fracture which occurs part way between the shoulder and elbow joints

💪🏼Distal humeral fracture which occurs near the elbow joint and is most common in children

🧡Conservative management may include:

🔸Collar and cuff
🔸Plastic humeral fracture orthosis
🔸Shoulder immobiliser (we wouldn’t use an abduction pillow)

🧩Autism is a developmental condition which affects how a person learns and interacts with the world around them. Because autism has many different characteristics, no two people on the spectrum are alike. Every Autistic person is different to every other. This is why autism is described as a ‘spectrum’.

💡Did you know that approximately 80% of people with autism experience some sort of issue with movement?

🧡As orthotists, we see many patients with physical conditions associated with autism, such as toe walking and flat feet. By creating custom orthotics, we can help them to improve their balance, mobility, correct gait deviations and atypical foot postures and increase their independence. Orthotics can also help with sensory processing and behavior management. Let's spread awareness about how orthotists can make a positive impact on the lives of those with autism!

👋🏽Say hello to Steve Owens!

👨‍⚕️Steve is a senior orthotist at Orthotics Plus, and has been serving the Richmond region and the Epworth Hospital with exceptional care for close to 30 years!

👣Steve holds a Diploma in Applied Science and a degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics. His main areas of interest include foot orthotics, fracture management, knee bracing (post op, sports and arthritis), neuromuscular (lower limb), spinal bracing and sports medicine.

🏥Earlier in his career, Steve worked for a private orthotic company that had contracts with many public hospitals. This meant he was responsible for all inpatient and outpatient orthotic requirements for St Vincent’s Hospital, Western Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, Prince Henry’s (now incorporated into Monash Medical Centre), PANCH (now Northern Hospital), Kew Cottages as well as a diverse range of private clients.

🦿In 1993, Steve opened a private practice in Richmond called Stephen Owens and Gayle Morrison Orthotics. In 2021, the clinic joined forces with Orthotics Plus and is now known as Orthotics Plus Richmond!
