Buying a used car? Things you need to know - Part 4

BRAKES

Brakes are an integral part of any driving experience, not only for safety, but also for general ride comfort. One commonly overlooked issue is brake shudder. Shudder is caused from the warping of rotors and can only be repaired by replacing the brake pads and either replacing or machining the rotors. Conditions that cause rotors to warp include driving style such as riding on the brakes excessively when they are not needed and poor alignment of the brake components. The latter of which needs attention by a mechanic.

A necessary consideration is legal measurements. Brake pads and rotors have a minimum thickness requirement by law to ensure the safety of the vehicle. Brake components worn excessively can result in brake pads falling out! And that can severely compromise braking performance which is a safety concern.

If you are at all concerned about your brakes, have your mechanic check it out.

VEHICLE HISTORY

How does one find out if the car has money owing or been stolen? Has it been written off or had any required recalls performed? That's when a Vehicle History Check or REVS check comes in. With the vehicle's VIN number, all of these things can be determined. Often with a Pre-Purchase Inspection, this check is included.

A service book is a great way to understand how well a vehicle was taken care of. Regular on-time servicing is necessary to ensure long term reliability. It is often advised against buying a vehicle without such documentation.

ENGINE LIGHT

This is one thing that no one wants to see come up on their dash. Generally, the engine light indicates an issue within the engine management system. One small engine problem can cascade into many other problems turning the instrument cluster into a Christmas light show. The engine light can be erased to look like there is nothing wrong, however it does not erase the telltale signs of any underlying issues. A good, qualified technician can easily spot this, so it is important to have a mechanic check it out before buying.

TYRES

The tyres are the only point of contact to the road. Worn tyres cause alignment issues, poor performance and are often overlooked as a major safety component.
Difference in tyre wear and size can severely impact the quality of drive and opens a whole new world of problems for All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles. This includes anything from abnormal noises to binding up of the driveline, and the latter is one thing that needs to be avoided at all costs.
Besides wheel alignment, poor tyre wear and pressure can cause a vehicle to pull to one side. Some things to check include wear pattern, tread depth, punctures and damage to the tyre.
