Done and dusted! Our three NIOA teams Heavy Haulage, the Bald & the Beautiful and Chafing the Dream this morning tackled the Army’s Kokoda Barracks obstacle course. Together they conquered jungle trails and river swims, climbed walls, crawled through tunnels, scaled cargo nets and carried logs all in the name of charity. Thanks to Legacy Brisbane for another unforgettable Canungra Combat Challenge filled with teamwork, determination and plenty of laughs.

The domestic manufacture of strategic munitions is one of Defence’s seven Sovereign Defence Industrial Priorities (SDIPs). We were delighted to welcome our trusted partner Roman Koehne, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Indirect Fires Business Unit, to Australia to visit the Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions (RNM) joint venture artillery shell forging plant in Maryborough, Queensland which is playing a vital role in allied 155mm production. Mr Koehne also visited NIOA’s operations at the Australian Government-owned munitions facility in Benalla, Victoria where Rheinmetall and NIOA are manufacturing medium calibre ammunition for the Australian Army’s Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles (CRVs). It’s a strong example of what the 2024 National Defence Strategy identifies as working with key partner defence forces “to coordinate our collective strengths and minimise gaps in our global security engagement”.
At NIOA, we specialise in Test & Evaluation (T&E) services. Our climatic environment conditioning tests, engineered for sub-zero temperatures, ensure utmost reliability, performance and safety in critical situations. As one of the select few globally equipped to conduct such tests, we’re proud to support a number of defence weapons projects.

The Australian National Defence Strategy calls for investment to strengthen Australia’s contribution to the defence industrial base it shares with the US and other key partners. We were delighted to welcome leaders from L3Harris Technologies’ Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) segment to our Australian operations including our global headquarters in Brisbane, the Government-owned, Contractor-operated Benalla munitions facility in Victoria where NIOA has a long-term tenancy, and our Canberra office in the nation’s capital.
In advancing toward the co-production of precision weapons and establishing domestic missile manufacturing in Australia, NIOA briefed the AR team on expansion opportunities for the potential production of munitions included in Australia’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise. We look forward to greater collaboration as we move ahead on this important sovereign capability.

Today marks the 109th anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landing on the shores of Gallipoli. They became known as the ANZACs.
