Congrats to Mirage Rural Health Club members for the careers night held in Dubbo recently. There was an impressive attendance by many of our local Doctors and the NSW RDN who all shared information about rural careers in medicine as well as the latest call for applications for the NSW RDN Rural Cadetships. The panel included individuals from the areas of surgery, emergency medicine, general practice, forensics, psychiatry, medical administration and student rep. They were also well supported by many other non-GP specialists and GP's in the audience . Congrats to Laura Mattiske and Faith Yeo for their professional facilitation and keeping the event on time and on topic. The Western NSW Regional TRaining Hub was pleased to offer some sponsorship for the night.

It was a great trip for the cadets and so good to talk to many of them at the evening function. The support and care provided by our local specialists and senior trainees to our Doctors of tomorrow was so evident as they took the time to speak with the cadets and answer their questions at the hospital and then also at the evening event. Congrats to all involved.

Notably three former students of the School of Rural Health Dubbo/Orange attended the GP Registrar Event as GPT trainees located in our region. Professor Catherine Hawke welcomed the opportunity to catch up with Sam Paynter, Joe Harris and Grace McKenzie.

One of the highlights of the GP Registrar Welcome night was the Career Speed Networking. Groups of three registrars rotated around eight different stations to hear from the eight different GP's why they chose a rural/regional career, their training pathway and to answer any of the registrars' questions. They had four minutes at each station and then a further 30 minutes as a group to network. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive for the opportunity with one caveat - they all wanted more time!!! thanks to Drs Andy Caldin, Sandra Gaffney, Rebeca Gough, Randall Greenberg, Pethidia Mango, Andrew Morton, Zahraa Sadeq, and Ian Spencer for sharing their stories on the night.

thanks to our partners in hosting the Welcome to Western NSW GP Registrar Event held at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo on 6th February. 23 Registrars were welcomed to the region by the Mayor of Dubbo , Mathew Dickerson and given the opportunity to speed network with eight GPs on the night. Dubbo Regional Council, the Royal Australian College of General Practice and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine worked with the Hub to deliver our second GP registrar welcome event with the inaugural event taking place last Sept. Taking advantage of the RACGP 2024 Orientation sessions in Dubbo enabled the maximum number of registrars to attend. Our speaker included Prof. Catherine Hawke, Head of Sydney School of Rural Health, Neil Webster, President Regional Sport Council, Scott McDonald WNSW Primary Health Network and Olivier Rothuizen Utrecht University medical student, The Netherlands undertaking research in Dubbo.

Destination Medicine Podcast made the international stage at the recent WONCA conference held in Sydney last week. Our very own Dr. Pip Southwell presented on behalf of the Editorial Committee and her presentation was exceptionally well received by a packed room and she fielded a multitude of questions immediately after her presentation as well as at the end of the session. One of the major themes from the thematic analysis of our first 12 student series episodes was the influence that General Practitioners have on individuals in choosing Medicine as a career. We may have also picked up a bit more talent for the podcasts from the audience. Pip completed her presentation by thanking the many GPs in the room for the role they play, often unbeknownst to themselves, in attracting more young people into medicine. Congrats to all.
