Matchat - Part 2

Is it true you can practise asana without a mat?

Yes, of course!! But if it’s a heated studio and a standing practice requiring foundations - nah!

Movement, breath and mindfulness are achievable anywhere. That’s the beauty of this practice and allows us to be free range yogis - BUT a sweaty flow needs stability.

Studio yoga usually requires a mat, blocks and straps. They support our practice, often making it more accessible and enjoyable.

Why should we use our own mat?
Depends on whether we want to put our face and chin where someone’s feet have been! There have been a few cases of yogi chin rash - it’s not great.

How should we clean our mats?

I personally don’t clean mine if it’s not super dirty. The more wet it gets, the quicker it loses its grip
If I want to remove marks with a soft sponge and diluted (spray and wipe) and dry naturally - but oils and make up are hard to shift.
I also like Yoga mat spray for a freshen up

If it’s super moist, dry naturally, flat! Always roll up with the practice side facing outwards.

As a regular practitioner, you WILL have to replace your mat - they don’t last forever. Every 6 -12 months if you sweat heaps and practise more than 3 x per week. Every 12-24 months if you are not regularly making it wet.

Your mat is as much of an investment as your membership. Consider getting your own blocks and straps for the reasons I have included here.

Let’s talk mats

Last week I went to a heated yoga class during a work trip. I usually take my own mat but I knew this studio provided mats and I was travelling light so I decided to use theirs. How bad could it be?

The mats were thick, easy to clean and durable ✅
But - completely unsuitable for heated yoga because they had little grip when dry and zero grip when moist. This room was HOT and SWEATY 🔥💧

The teacher, sequencing and music were great but my experience was not. I couldn’t find stability, my hands and feet slid out of position and I saw other students with towels under their hands and feet in strange shapes as they tried to balance without sliding into injury. Once I knew my foundations were compromised, I avoided some poses but the students who were being cued slipped around during wheel pose and warriors. Unsafe!

It’s difficult to find a perfect mat and most have great qualities with challenges. But here are some things to look out for:

GRIP
Stability is important. To focus in flow while finding balance and alignment, strength and ease, you must have a stable foundation. If your hands or feet slide around in standing poses or balances, your presence will be compromised and you’ll become increasing frustrated. Grip is essential!

SIZE, WEIGHT, THICKNESS & SOFTNESS

Comfort when kneeling or laying down is a nice to have so consider the depth (podmats are 5mm and soft to touch)
Ensuring the mat doesn’t move around or curl up is a must so light mats may be too flimsy.
A large mat to accommodate the space required to extend and expand is key (especially for longer limbs)

SURFACE MATERIAL:
Cork - great for sweaty hands and feet but can pool sweat if it gets very moist. Naturally anti bacterial. Comfortable and warm for yin. Rubber bottom.

PU - Super grippy, anti microbial. Great for beginners and experienced yogis alike. Comfortable!
Stain and mark easily (oils, cremes, make up) so lighter colours require care.
Super sweaty practitioners will have to rotate mats so they dry and replace more often as the surface can erode more quickly losing essential grip.

Microsuede, natural rubber & Jute are also great options.

HEALTHSPAN!!!!

My focus as I move into my fifties!
My longevity will be gruelling if it isn’t physically and cognitively in tact.

I now (mostly) live a life that rejects the mainstream narrative of medical intervention and toxic food/alcohol. I reckon I have a much better chance of living well - lowering my risk of heart issues, cancer, chronic illness and inflammation by embracing tools and techniques often mocked by the establishment.

Exercise (strength and mobility) filtered water, organic unprocessed food, breathing well, direct sunlight (no sunscreen) going to bed early are all habits I don’t even think about now.

I check my HRV and heart rate to ensure my nervous system is balanced and I connect, meeting new people and doing new things!

I’m far from perfect - I binge eat, watch tv and look at random s**t on my phone for too long, I compare myself to others and worry about what people think of me. I buy too much activewear and wish I was taller, thinner and had better hair.

At my age, we aren’t expected to be energetic, strong, sexual or vibrant. It’s kind of easier to disappear as we wrinkle and sag. There are days where I feel flat, fat and sad.

Partly because we have been shafted by the system with birth control from a young age, hideous mismanagement of childbirth, a complete lack of conversation around menopause AND pushed to drink wine to manage stress and celebrate. Partly because we rarely see examples of us - young people in our 50s!!!

My plan for this decade is to be mostly energetic, sexy, confident, curious, and very very resistant to the s**t sick system. I wanna be proud of how I navigate this time so I look back with no regrets. I’ll probs watch telly a bit and do some napping but now I know what I know, I’ll be vibing and thriving!

This is the year of ocean swims, 80s aerobics, bush doofs, lots of loving and adventures in nature 🧊❤️🙏

Hope I see you guys on the way 🤙

Yoga has been the backbone of my life for a pretty long time now. Supporting me in all the ways!

Some of the vast gifts I’ve been given through this practice are:

Consistency/discipline
Vulnerability
Acceptance
Flow
Strength
Mobility
Breath

The biggest gift without a doubt, is community, friendship and love. There isn’t a place in the world I have not been welcomed warmly by other yogis! My fellow teachers and students are my world! Some are lifelong family.

And I pinch myself because I get to offer my take on this incredible journey to others. Even during hard times, holding space for others’ practice lifts me like nothing else. It’s wild!!

So to all my teachers (some faves pictured here) and my students, thank you for cocreating my abundant life. I love you all immensely and I hope that you feel that love from me ❤️

Away from home in the tropics (so much gratitude for the ☀️🌴)

I have no classes, community or membership to rely upon and not much daily routine (apart from serving my children) so it would be easy to skip my movement or put it off.

And yet, I find discipline and consistency I don’t always have at home.
I jog or walk daily, setting goals for myself. I move through my asana practice intuitively, with no attachment to fancy balances but just pure nourishment and mindfulness.

Even if exercise and yoga can feel like a bit of a drag when on hols, it’s actually what gives me permission to relax without guilt. It frees me from tension, provides absolute presence and I notice things about myself I don’t have time to be conscious of at home!

Here’s my lil post jog stretch 🧘‍♀️
