There’s something very revealing about the humans we reach for most often - the people we are drawn toward, those that we feel lucky to have call us theirs - our tribe, our posse, our familiar.

When we stop to wonder on it all - how and why we choose them and they us, how we negotiate and navigate our aloneness and togetherness, how and when we partition and pull away or connect and combine, how we play and move and contend and mend. We learn so much about what we value and who we might become.

My painting You, is about the ones we hold out for and flow forward with and stand by - the ones we squeeze just that bit tighter and always seem to linger a bit longer with. Our favourites.

In art as in life… There are lots of layers and doing overs and trying this and that and following my nose in this one and I couldn’t for the life of me know the end from the beginning if I tried ✨ And for me, that’s where both the beauty and the bane of creativity lie.

It’s all so unresolved and uncomfortable and unavoidable.

It’s in making friends with the uncertainty and hugging the not knowing and trusting that in the doing, something beautiful is waiting to be found and made and understood - that’s where the sweet stuff sits.

And it doesn’t matter how many times I begin, it always feels like risky business.

But we were made to create, all of us - made to make something more, to become.

And so we add layers and do overs and try this and that and follow our nose because our bodies already know what our mind guesses at - that if we let them, our hearts and hands will always move us toward making more of our time and our lives and our loves - that if we can trust in something broader than our own immediate sight, we will be led and lighted every step of the way ✨

I’ll be here today, thinking and painting and making meaning with marks. I often paint along to a podcast or music - it helps me detach from my round and round mind and find flow. Just now though, silence feels important and so I’ve opened the doors to let the sound of the air and birds and bush come in and carry forward the things I need to see to my mind.

There are more times than not when dreams stay just that - dreams - imaginings and fancies and wishes.

Sometimes, it’s just not the right time, or place, or the right person. Sometimes courage wanes, or momentum lags, or the wind blows stronger than the spark. Every now and then though, dreams do take form, and it’s this that my painting Dreamer Did Dare is all about.

Dreamer Did Dare is an ode to you. You who did the hard thing - you who stepped into the unknown, you who said yes, you who said no more, you who said the thing you’ve never been able to say. You who asked the question, you who turned a corner, you who made the move, you who chanced and ventured and fiddled and fuddled and stumbled and skipped forward - you who shifted your mind and lifted your hands to move you closer to your more. So go you. Do you. Dare.

I’m on the home stretch with this one.

Thinking about emerging 🦋

And the end of each painting I wander around the canvas.

I’m hopeless at remembering processes or the way I mixed certain colours and so I try instead to infuse the feelings I had as I painted - imprinting stories of hearts and home and loved ones, solidifying narratives that surfaced and reflections that turn now into learning. They all make for layers and layers of colour filled heart memories.

It’s time now to say goodbye and ready myself to paint the next story ✨

I've been thinking about the things that give our insides form and our outsides feather - the things we fill ourselves with, surround ourselves with, give our time to, our mind to, our heart to. The ideas and identities that we've nestled into - the ones that make us feel safe, the ones that keep us hidden, the ones that make us brave, the ones that reveal what we're made of. All of those things tell of our stuff, our staple - our substance.
