Mallacoota Fun Run

Mallacoota Preschool families, along with key organisers of the Mallacoota Fun Run, wish to inform our fun run community that a difficult but necessary decision has been made to discontinue our Fun Run. Since commencing in 2013, the Mallacoota Fun Run has had six successful years. It has brought together local runners, walkers, pram-pushers, sandcastle builders, percussionists, and cheering spectators, along with athletes from hundreds of kilometres away, for a healthy and enjoyable family event that is a demonstration of our community’s spirit.

In six years, we’re proud to say it has been an incident free event (apart from some minor sprains and scrapes), largely due to the commitment of our many volunteers, emergency services and other organisations. Pre-school families and other organisers have worked extremely well together across the many facets of the event.

Each year the Fun Run has raised more than $10,000 for the Pre-school, which needed funds to meet a shortfall in government funding and parent fees. It seems incredible that such a significant amount could be raised in a single event, and we wish to thank everyone who has showed their support of the Preschool by participating in the event, purchasing raffle tickets, entering the sandcastle competition, or enjoying an egg and bacon roll. In addition, we have been fortunate to have generous sponsors who year after year backed our vision of this event and showed support for the education of the young children in our community.

Under a new model of government funding, the shortfall in the Preschool’s budget in 2019 has been considerably reduced. Kinder families will continue to hold raffles and other fundraising events next year, but we have made the decision to farewell the Fun Run. A huge amount of effort has gone into running the event year after year, with complex hand-overs to bring on board new members of the organising team.

We’re immensely proud of what we’ve all achieved over six years and what you, our wonderful patrons, have contributed to our remote Mallacoota community and its thriving Preschool. Thank you for supporting and believing in our event. We hope you’ve been inspired to stay healthy, stay fit, and most of all, maintain the community spirit and have fun.

Congratulations to all 220 participants on your achievements at this year's Mallacoota Fun Run! It was a fantastic event enjoyed by all. We raised an incredible $12,500 for our community kinder! Thanks to everyone for making it another amazing year. The Mallacoota pre-school really appreciates what the community and visitors do to make this a memorable and great fundraising event each year. YAY! It's Fun Run Day!!

It takes a lot to pull off a successful and safe event. We are deeply thankful to have such a supportive and active volunteering community here in Mallacoota. This event would not be possible without the wonderful folks at the CFA, SES, Lion's Club, our service and emergency agencies - Parks Victoria, Victoria Police, and East Gippsland Shire Council. In total, there are more than 70 community members who come together and generously give their time to this fundraising event in support of the Mallacoota Kinder.

We've been contacted by Parks as well as concerned community members about some special little locals we have at Betka Beach -
'We are fortunate to have a pair of rare little Hooded Plovers nesting at Betka Beach. Their attempts to raise a family have so far been unsuccessful, however there is a new nest with eggs at on the sand at Betka! The nesting area is fenced and some kind bird-watching local residents will be in the area during the fun run to ensure adults and children alike don't accidentally walk into the nesting zone. The sandcastle competition will be well away from this zone too. Please be reminded that at this time of year Council has regulated that no dogs are allowed at Betka Beach and we do not allow dogs to participate in the fun run either. Thanks for helping to keep our beautiful flora and fauna thriving!'

There are water stations along the course for the 5km, 10km and 1/2 marathon - but if you need to hydrate between stations then please bring a water bottle.
