The Gunnery Range Hat.
This wonderful new season hat is a hickory striped cover based on a Daisy Mae and a ‘what if’ USN piece of kit issued for Gunnery and Target practice at midshipmen’s school and to be worn with Naval Denims and Dungarees. A more rugged hat for use in the field that doesn’t show dirt and grime as much as tradition white Dixie and offering a greater level of sun protection when outdoors for extended periods of time.

On the cutting table for summer is the long awaited Beach Battalion Togs. Based on my fathers 1949 legendary bathers, I’ve arrived to recreate a great basic HBT pull on beach shirt. Along with other Atoll essentials these speak to a life spent under a Pacific sun.

To keep the Syndicates crew in up to date kit, Milo Minderbinder placed an order with the Papa Nui Cap Co to produce a new style aviators cap in the regions favourite 1929 Telo Mimetico. One of the oldest Camo patterns and still in use today it’s perfect for the airfields of Pianosa and for wear under the Mediterranean sun. It’s also Yossarian approved and mission ready for pushing the bombing line north.

There’s a couple of obsessive things I do, actually more than a couple. As a cap and hat man I have a tendency to explore an idea to a ridiculous level, in this case is Army Denim hats. I have a kit almost full of them. There’s a couple of original 30’s ones but mostly they’re from about every manufacturer I could get one from including all the majors and them@also from some of the reenact it’s brands there’s a huge difference in quality, not only in fabrication but especially so in the variances in the cut. Some are really good, others laughable. This Winter I introduce my version, The Army Denim Hat. I was wearing it last night and thinking about how happy I was with the way it turned out. The team in Sendai under have done a stellar job in interpreting my spec sheets on this one. I’m loving the denim choice and the irreverent fit. The denim idea harks back to hues used during the war years. Indigo uses a petroleum base in the extraction process and because of rationing, fabric manufacturers developed a synthetic silhouette dye process to replace the petroleum. The result was a grey tone in the indigo which is particular to the 40’s. I think my Army DWNIM hat captures that quite well as does the construction of the fabric, a linen cotton mix which further enhances the period feel.
This one is going to be a favourite!

The Pilar Cap.
It’s possibly one of the most iconic and significant cap styles of all time. It’s a piece of equipment so specifically niche that’s it’s form is almost perfectly designed for any and all outdoor activity.
It may not be for everyone but isn’t about time we stop thinking about a generic ball cap shape as being the defining piece of men’s headwear?
