SLED Investigators have fined a Melbourne-based company $16,500 for providing unlicensed locksmiths and advertising without a licence while allegedly running a locksmithing scam in NSW.

One of the unlicensed persons was issued $11,000 worth of fines for carrying on a security activity without a licence and for failing to comply with a requirement of an Enforcement Officer. Several others left the country following contact from SLED Investigators.

Due to legal reasons, we cannot name the company or persons involved at this time. Investigations into unlicensed locksmiths are continuing.

Last Friday night in Rockingham, Western Australia, we celebrated a very important milestone in the training of future locksmiths – the official opening of a new, permanent training facility for apprentices.

Following temporary homes in Beaconsfield and Kwinana, this new facility has been specifically designed and fitted out for locksmiths. It represents many years of hard work from numerous people, and also a significant investment by both South Metropolitan TAFE and the Department of Workforce and Development.

The evening was attended by representatives from both the TAFE and industry, and it was co-sponsored by South Metropolitan TAFE, the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia and the Locksmiths Guild of Australia.

A big thank you to Colin Wilkins from the TAFE who hosted the night. Thanks also to Richard Knowles and David Hartigan from the LGA and Peter Johnson from the MLAA for making the trip to WA to attend the event.

Our industry suppliers also deserve a special mention. A number of them installed some terrific signage in the main training area:

• ASSA ABLOY
• SG LOCK & SECURITY
• LSC
• LOCK & KEY
• SAFE CENTRAL

Our suppliers donate many thousands of dollars worth of products every year, and without their support, the next generation of locksmiths would not have access to the very latest products and equipment.

A special thank you to Adam Burling from Safe Central for the very generous donation of electronic safe locks. These will be put to very good use when the apprentices are learning about safes and safe locks.

A big thank you to former Regional Director for Western Australia, Steve Arias. Steve has worked tirelessly for over ten years, often behind the scenes, to get this facility up and running, and I am sure his efforts will be appreciated for many years by future generations of locksmiths.

A big pat on the back to TAFE teacher Richard James. Richard’s passion and perseverance over many years have finally paid off. Richard believes he now has the best TAFE facility in the country – not that he is bias.

BTW, the Mexican chicken wings were delicious!

Congratulations Western Australia. The best is yet to come.

Matt Graham
Regional Director for Western Australia

The scammers have not gone away. Make sure you call a member of the Master Locksmiths Association.

Avoid Locksmith Scams - Master Locksmiths A professional locksmith for only $45. It sounds too good to be true because it is too good to be true! You would never expect to get a plumber or an electrician to call out to your home or business for $45.
