Day 7: Gorilla Trek 🤍

🇺🇬 Kyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM) - Church day 🇺🇬

Today we attended the KCM Gospel mass, a soul-filled, high energy session filled with singing, celebrating, dancing, we were welcomed and thanked with open arms (literally the hugs were coming thick and fast) 🤗

After visiting the Nateete slum yesterday, walking into KCM today showed a stark contrast.

The KCM children are thriving! The difference Entrepreneurial Business School has made by sponsoring children over the last 5 years was hugely visible. The grounds and buildings are evolving, the children are healthy, well nourished and attending school. The on-site Weema Medical Clinic is providing essential healthcare to the community and is going a long way to change the current stats of one death per every 5 pregnancies.

There is still a long way to go in providing food and education to the children of Uganda. The road to safety for all vulnerable children from witch doctors and child traffickers is more challenging. In the first three months of this year 30 children have been rescued.

Where there’s a will there’s a way, so Bruce announced his future vision for how we will achieve this. Stay tuned to find out more, and how we all can be part of the solution.

🇺🇬 Day 2 - Nateete visit 🇺🇬

To set the scene of how some children in Kampala live (outside of KCM), team jumped on two buses and headed for nearby slum Nateete.

Here we were escorted down to Bridge Christian Ministries, BCM, and their New Seasons school. We were warmly welcomed by pastor Haggai his wife Agnes, and their teaching team, along with hundreds of local kids.

The team shared lollies, blew bubbles and gave hats to the kids, most of whom on average only eat once every four days. Those snake lollies were savoured bite by bite.

The smiles, hugs and gratitude shared by these kids will be etched into our hearts forever. As will the smiles we saw on the teachers and armed guards faces as they saw the children of Nateete slum enjoy our gifts.

We learnt some incredibly sobering facts during our visit, such as:
👉These children only eat once every four days
👉90% of the families are single mother households
👉90% of the children at Nateete have absolutely no education, and come from uneducated families
👉0% make it to university education, to have an opportunity to better their families circumstances and break the poverty cycle
👉The children are half the physical size of Australian kids due to malnutrition
👉The local water source is also the sewer, disease is rampant and medical resources are negligible

BUT… we also leaned:

👍To provide one cup of porridge a day and an education to one child only costs $2AUD per day.
👍To provide schooling, food AND boarding for an older child to take them off the streets and a career in crime is only $1800AUD per year.
👍Uganda has plenty of teachers, plenty of kids in need, they simply lack the schooling facilities and funds. It was abundantly clear that we absolutely have the ability to easily change hundreds of lives if we choose to.

And the overwhelming response from the crew was… we absolutely choose to.
