In celebration of Harmony Day, Balga Primary School held an official ceremony to reveal the remarkable mural Mr Merrells painted for our school, titled Moort Koortkwobakiny. This vibrant artwork was created in collaboration with junior students, who contributed their own drawings of Australian animals. Mr Merrells has skilfully incorporated these drawings into his design, creating a masterpiece filled with meaning.
The mural features: A large yellow sun representing family, adorned with family symbols. 8 clap sticks representing celebration. The words "Moort Koortkwobakiny" meaning "celebrating families" in Wadjak Noongar language. Imagery depicting the journey, feet, rainbow serpent, and Noongar seasons, all pointing towards the centre for family celebrations.
Mr Merrells is a cherished member of our school community who has volunteered at Balga Primary School since 2017. His impact on our students’ understanding of Aboriginal culture has been significant and valuable.
The Children's University program provides opportunities for children and their families to engage with the local and wider community to participate in fun and engaging learning activities offered by validated Children's University Learning Destinations. These places include public libraries, zoos, parks, museums, art galleries, theatres, sporting clubs, school clubs as well as businesses. A full list of Learning Destinations can be viewed here: https://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/education/childrens-university-wa
Students enrolled in Children's University are issued with a ‘Passport to Learning’, which records their individual learning journey. After 30 or 35 hours of learning, the children’s participation is recognised through the award of certificates presented at a graduation ceremony held at Edith Cowan University.
If your child attends Balga Primary School, and you would like them to participate in Children's University, please visit the Balga Primary School Admin Office or speak to Mr Schultz.
