If you're concerned that you or someone you care about is experiencing an eating disorder, it is important to make an appointment with a health professional as soon as possible. Early intervention is the most effective action for recovery.

In EDV's online LearnED course, ๐—”๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, our lived experience community share their experience of seeking support from a GP for the first time. Reminder: it's never "too early" or "too late" to ask for help. Recovery is always possible, and help is always available.

Early intervention can make a significant difference in eating disorder recovery, by minimising the severity and duration of the illness and reducing its broader impacts. If you're noticing the first signs of an eating disorder in yourself or someone else (eg. preoccupation with food or weight, changes in eating habits, emotional distress), it is critical - and never too soon - to seek support. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

At the same time, asking for help is just as important for those who have been experiencing an eating disorder for several years. Even at the later stages of an eating disorder, seeking help can lead to significant improvements in physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. It's essential to hold onto hope and remember that recovery is always a possibility.

Recovery is a unique journey for everyone, and there is no "wrong" time to begin. Engaging with healthcare professionals, joining support groups, opening up to friends and family, and using online resources can all be courageous steps toward healing and growth. ๐Ÿ’œ

EDV is here to help at every stage of the eating disorder journey. To speak with one of our friendly EDV Hub volunteers about how we may be able to best support you, please contact us on:

Did you know that July 24 is International Self Care Day? Today, we're sharing some ideas on what self-care can look like while in recovery from an eating disorder.

While social media may influence us to believe that practising self-care should look glamorous or involve buying expensive products, in reality self-care is as simple as taking regular action towards our health and wellbeing.

This is even more important to recognise when in eating disorder recovery, as often this process involves letting go of the idea of needing to be 'perfect', and embracing ourselves exactly as we are. Learning to find or create moments of joy, ease and care for ourselves, regardless of whether that appears aesthetically pleasing or 'Instagram worthy', is an important skill to build. ๐Ÿ’œ

For example, practising self-care in recovery can look like:
๐ŸŒฑ Asking for support when needed
๐ŸŒฑ Calling a friend or family member
๐ŸŒฑ Taking a break from social media
๐ŸŒฑ Setting healthy boundaries
๐ŸŒฑ Attending appointments
๐ŸŒฑ Practising deep breathing
๐ŸŒฑ Watching your favourite movie
๐ŸŒฑ Wearing comfy clothes

Do you have any ED recovery self-care tips? Feel free to share them in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Recovery from an eating disorder is a complex and deeply personal journey that can sometimes take longer than anticipated. Just as an eating disorder doesn't develop overnight, the process of recovery won't happen overnight. It's important to remember that healing takes time. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

As recovery is not a linear process, it can involve setbacks and plateaus from time to time. While this can be frustrating, each experience overcoming these challenges can strengthen your ability to cope with future obstacles.

If you are finding your recovery journey to be taking longer than you had anticipated, try to embrace patience and self-acceptance. Recognise that you're doing the best you can and that progress, no matter how slow, is still progress in the ongoing journey towards a healthier relationship with food, body image, and self. ๐ŸŒฑ

EDV is here to help, support and lend a listening ear at every stage of the eating disorder journey, from initial discovery through to full recovery - and every stage in between.

We're thrilled to share that a new paper on Eating Disorders Victoria's Peer Mentoring Program (PMP) has been published in the Journal of Eating Disorders. ๐Ÿ‘

The paper explores and evaluates EDV's Peer Mentoring Program, with findings that support the value of peer mentoring in eating disorder recovery.

This exciting publication is thanks to La Trobe University Senior Research Fellow Anita Raspovic, EDV's Rachael Duck (PMP Manager), Andrew Synnot (PMP Project Officer) and EDV CEO Belinda Caldwell, alongside several other co-authors. The evaluation itself was possible due to the Medical Research Future Fund Million Minds โ€‹via the InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders MAINSTREAM project.

It is rewarding to see EDV's Peer Mentoring Program recognised in this worldwide journal, and congratulate not only the authors, but also EDV's PMP staff members, the lived experience mentors, and all who have taken part in and completed the program as a mentee in eating disorder recovery.

27% of the 1.1 million Australians with an eating disorder are experiencing an Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED), making it one of the most common eating disorders.

OSFEDs are identified when a person presents with symptoms similar to, but not exactly the same as other eating disorders (eg. they may not meet the specific DSM-5 criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa). ๐Ÿ”

It's important to know that despite presenting slightly differently, OSFED can be just as severe as any other eating disorder, and can have serious mental and physical symptoms.

Like any eating disorder, OSFED is not a choice, but a complex and serious mental health condition that occurs in people of all ages and genders.

Throughout the development of the National Strategy, the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) consistently heard from people with lived experience, their families, carers and supports that there is a need to change the way that society broadly speaks about health, food, minds and bodies. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Based on these recommendations, NEDC, in collaboration with La Trobe University, has developed a set of principles that will guide the ways that information about health, food, minds and body are provided to people across settings. Consistent and safe messages in the ways that professionals speak about bodies, teach about nutrition, develop health and related policies and accommodate difference can help to minimise unintended risks and harms in relation to eating disorders, disordered eating and body image distress.

NEDC warmly invites you to the launch of The Eating Disorder Safe Principles.
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Wednesday 24 July, 12:00 - 1:00pm AEST

During the launch, the ED Safe principles will be explored in-depth along with the Companion Document, โ€˜First Nations Perspectives: Strengthening the Eating Disorder Safe Principles.โ€™

is a time to celebrate the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This yearโ€™s theme is ๐™†๐™š๐™š๐™ฅ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™๐™ž๐™ง๐™š ๐˜ฝ๐™ช๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ! ๐˜ฝ๐™ก๐™–๐™ , ๐™‡๐™ค๐™ช๐™™ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™‹๐™ง๐™ค๐™ช๐™™, inviting all Australians to amplify the First Nations voices that have long been silenced. ๐Ÿ“ข

This week and every week, EDV recognises and celebrates the enduring strength and spirit of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and their deep connection to Country. We acknowledge that our office stands on the rightful land of the Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin Nation, and pay our respects to elders past and present. Sovereignty of this land was never ceded.

We know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience eating disorders and body image issues at similar, if not slightly higher rates to other people in Australia. Research suggests that 30% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people are extremely or very concerned about their body image. ๐Ÿ˜”

EDV acknowledges the challenges faced by First Nations people in relation to eating disorders and body image. In doing so, we acknowledge that eating disorder experiences may be exacerbated by social and political discrimination, and/or intergenerational trauma, and that these experiences are not divested from colonial history. We also recognise the impacts of colonisation in the loss of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food cultures and traditions, and disruption of healthy food relationships.

As an organisation, EDV is committed to upholding an inclusive space offering support and guidance to all Victorians of all cultural identities. To access support, guidance and resources to assist in the eating disorder recovery journey, please contact our Hub on ๐Ÿ“ž 1300 550 236.

"EDV understands the unique, complex and often invisible experiences of eating disorders, and works hard to remove stigma and shame. I was having my last peer mentoring session with a lovely young woman, I looked over to her and she was crying and she said โ€˜You are speaking my language, I just feel so seen and validated.'"
- Grace, EDV Peer Mentor

When dealing with an eating disorder, it can sometimes feel as though nobody truly understands what you are experiencing - which in turn, can lead to feelings of isolation or shame. ๐Ÿ˜”

This is why lived experience peer support is so crucial in recovery. EDV's Peer Mentoring Program has been shown to reduce readmission rates, improve participantsโ€™ quality of life and inspire hope on the recovery journey.

But we couldn't do any of this without your support. Can you help us ensure that no Victorian individual has to face an eating disorder alone?

This , we're excited to share our latest position paper: Men, Boys and Gender Inclusivity in Eating Disorders.

What are we advocating for?
๐Ÿ“ข The challenging of gender assumptions, stereotypes and biases to enable early help-seeking.
๐Ÿง  Wide-spread recognition of sociocultural factors (e.g., male body ideals) that influence body image across a range of settings (e.g., schools and sporting clubs) is critical for early intervention.
๐Ÿฅ A gender-inclusive lens for training and workforce development (e.g., GPs, public hospital units, male lived experience professionals) is needed.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Men and boysโ€™ experiences need to inform and be incorporated into the development and delivery of treatment & service models.

To read EDV's Position Statement in full, please head to:
https://www.eatingdisorders.org.au/about-us/our-advocacy/

Photos from Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria's post 14/06/2024

Eating disorders are a serious issue impacting men and boys, and they are often underrecognised and underdiagnosed.

Research indicates that over one third of people experiencing an eating disorder are men. Experts believe that this number could be even higher, as the stigma surrounding eating disorders in men prevents many from seeking help. ๐Ÿ˜”

Traditionally, there has been a lack of community awareness, clinician knowledge and research focused on eating disorders in males. With these complex illnesses on the rise across all genders, it's more important than ever that we dispel the myth that eating disorders "only happen to women", and create supportive environments for men and boys to seek help.

๐Ÿ” Today, we're taking a look at three of the most common risk factors for eating disorders in men: sociocultural pressures, psychological factors and participation in certain sports.

If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, EDV is here to listen, support and offer helpful resources every step of the way.

๐Ÿ“ˆ 20% of people with anorexia nervosa
๐Ÿ“ˆ 30% of people with bulimia nervosa
๐Ÿ“ˆ 43% of people with binge eating disorder
๐Ÿ“ˆ 55-77% of people with other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED)
๐Ÿ“ˆ 67% of people with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)

Many experts believe that these numbers could be even higher, as the stereotypes and shame surrounding eating disorders in men prevents many from recognising their symptoms and/or seeking help. Lack of awareness amongst health professionals can also lead to missed diagnosis and treatment.๐Ÿ˜”

It's time to break the stigma and support men's mental and physical health by creating a more inclusive understanding of these illnesses.

We're excited to share that the Peer Mentoring Program (PMP) is now accepting registrations for the upcoming round, beginning July and running until December 2024. ๐Ÿ‘

The PMP is a free, 6 month program providing one-on-one mentoring with an EDV Peer Mentor who has recovered from an eating disorder. Participants and Mentors meet on a fortnightly basis for 13 sessions, working together to develop and achieve recovery-focused goals.

The PMP is open to those who:
โœท are aged 18 years or older
โœท are able to commit to fortnightly mentoring sessions
โœท have an active treatment team consisting of a GP, mental health clinician and support from a family member or friend.

The program aims to provide complimentary support alongside clinical treatment to help individuals sustain better recovery outcomes.

To secure a place, it's advised to submit a registration form as soon as possible.
