Our P&C work hard to raise funds to support our students at Avonvale PS. One of the easiest ways that you can help towards this is through our Containers for Change program, where we get 10c for any container with the 10c return mark on them.

We are on a drive to collect as many as we can for Wednesday 24 July 2024. Please encourage your family and friends to collect and donate as many as possible to bring in on this date.

As part of our outdoor learning program today we have had St Johns Ambulance in the school. Every student from Years 1 - 6 has received some basic First Aid training.

I learnt that St Johns have a St Johns First Responder App that is free on Itunes/Google Play store. I would highly recommend that everyone gets this on their phone, you just never know when you may need it.

Tomorrow your children will be bringing home a First Aid certificate, please fill our the information on the back of the card and put it somewhere visible in your house (eg the fridge) as part of your families emergency plan.

Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term!

Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation’s primary school skipping challenge that helps kids move more, have fun, and raise funds for life-saving research and programs.

This year we’ve got an audacious goal to see our student Heart Heroes at Avonvale to raise $2000.00.

Register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started. www.jumprope.org.au/parents

Students will be skipping throughout the term, during this time you can share their online fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause.

We will hold our school Jump Off Day on Friday 28 June, this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!

Dear parents and carers,

As you may be aware, the Department of Education is negotiating with the State School Teachers’ Union (SSTUWA) and Principals’ Federation of Western Australia to reach an industrial agreement. While these negotiations are still ongoing, the SSTUWA has announced industrial action for half a day on the morning of Tuesday 23 April 2024.

To ensure adequate duty of care the school will be operating on a “partially open” basis for the morning of the planned industrial action.

This means that some student groups will be able to attend for the whole school day, and some will be welcomed to school after the stop-work action has concluded.

The following student groups will be able attend for the whole school day:
• Students in K, PP, Year 1 and Year 2. These students will be able to access a modified learning program for the morning session and their regular learning program from 12.30pm.

All other student groups will be welcomed to the school at 12.30pm, when regular teaching and learning will recommence.

Operation of the School Bus Services (orange buses) will be decided on a case-by-case basis. I will notify you of any changes to the standard operation of service as soon as possible.

If you would like to discuss any particular arrangements, please contact Ms Leah Vogler, Principal on 9621 5200.

We want to assure you that students who are absent on this day will not be penalised for this absence, and it will not be on their student record.
The Department of Education has assured me that they are working as hard, and as fast as they can to reach a resolution with the union. Every effort is being made to minimise future impact on all schools.

To ensure that this communication reaches all families we are also emailing this out to those families who have provided their email addresses, you also should receive a hard copy through your children today, it will be sent out on MGM, Class Dojo and Facebook.

Kind regards
Ms Leah Vogler
Principal

Today was an action packed day of outdoor learning! As part of our program we had Scitech come out and trial some new programs with us which will be rolled out across other schools over the coming year. They will be at Avonvale again next Wednesday as well. We also harvested our first lot of watermelons, check out the size of this one!

On Wednesdays at Avonvale Primary School we have some art lessons outdoors.
For the past 5 weeks students have been invited to help construct this collaborative sculpture.
They started by learning about the artist of reference, Judith Scott.
They reused materials that had been collected by the Avonvale community and constructed a sculpture that they then wrapped in scrap wool.
Students worked individually and together to add to the sculpture. The only rule was that no one else’s work was allowed to be removed.
The benefits of this joint artwork are many. Their individual creativity is valued whilst promoting respect for the work of others and working towards a common goal. Students are creating, communicating, collaborating, self regulating and playing.
The result is an artwork that the students can feel ownership over without ‘owning’ it. The art is as much about the process as it is the end product.
Our artwork project is on display at the Northam Library and will be there for the duration of the school holiday period. We hope that you and your children are able to visit the Library over the holidays to enjoy the sculpture and the Northam Library facilities.
After the artwork is displayed it will be deconstructed by the students and the pieces put into the recycling bin or reused.
A big thank you to Mrs Pemberton for steering this project with our students.

A big shout out to our Year 3 and Year 5 students, they have completed all of their NAPLAN tests. This year we have witness a 100% participation rate where every student worked hard to apply themselves to each test. They persevered when it was difficult, they applied their own personal brain breaks within the testing period to help maintain their concentration and they attempted to use their strategies when working through difficult questions. We could not be prouder of their efforts.

A big shout out to our Year 3 and Year 5 students who have been working so hard with their NAPLAN tests. 2 down, 2 to go! They have really applied themselves and we are just so proud of them!

This is the end result of our school community supporting Avonvale P & C through many fundraising events and the school canteen. Over the Christmas holidays the P & C organised the installation of some indoor and outdoor blinds for our Kindilink classroom. This has made the classroom and verandah a more comfortable and safe space for learning. Thank you to our P & C members for organising.
