Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment options for bunions vary. Before resorting to surgical options, which can include reshaping the bone, or breaking it to change the alignment, your doctor may suggest trying conservative treatment options. Conservative treatment options can include changing shoes, using custom orthotics, or medication. It is important to talk to your podiatrist about which option, or combination of options is best for you.
Non-surgical treatment options for bunions can be very effective. In this blog, we explore a number of non-invasive treatments to reduce the pain caused by bunions and minimise risk of progression.

As podiatrists, we see a lot of people who are dealing with calluses and corns on their feet. Calluses and corns are common foot conditions that can be caused by a variety of factors, but one of the most common is footwear.
Wearing ill-fitting shoes, or shoes that don’t provide enough support, can cause your feet to develop calluses and corns. These conditions can be painful and unsightly, and they can make it difficult to walk or stand for long periods of time.
Click the link to read more about how footwear can contribute to the development of calluses and corns, and what you can do to prevent them.

A hard corn is similar to a callus, in that it is comprised of hard skin caused by friction. Where callus can be protective, and form from either friction or pressure, a hard corn develops when there is shearing across an area, spinning the callus into a conical shape. Corns can be very small (1mm) to up to 20mm. The conical shape means that corns are often more painful with direct pressure, like when you stand up, or put your shoes on.
Corns and calluses on the bottom of your foot can be painlessly removed by your podiatrist, usually in one appointment. Corns are ‘scooped out’, instantly removing the feeling of walking on a pebble, giving you a noticeable difference when your feet touch the ground. Calluses are often there to protect our feet, so your podiatrist will debride most of the callus, but usually leave a small and comfortable protective layer intact. Your podiatrist can also talk to you about how to prevent corns and calluses from returning.

Bunions, or hallux valgus, are characterised by a bony bump seen on the inside of the foot, near the big toe joint. Bunions develop gradually over time and can be painful. Some people may only experience pain or discomfort when wearing tight shoes that rub against it. Other people may notice marked swelling and redness as a direct response to pressure and high loads on the big toe joint.
If you’re worried about developing a bunion or have recently started seeing changes in the shape of your toes, our podiatrists at The Foot and Ankle Clinic can help.

Pain from shin splints is thought to be caused by repeated stress or strain on the muscles that attach to the shin bone, or on the bone itself.
Here are some tips from The Foot and Ankle Clinic to help prevent and/or manage shin splints:
1. Ensure your exercise program is tailored to you and you allow enough time for your body to adapt to training loads – it’s important to avoid sudden increases in training intensity, duration, or frequency.
2. Choose the right footwear for your feet
3. See your podiatrist for a biomechanical assessment
Podiatrist Mitchell Paterson also discusses what the evidence says about shin splints, possible causes and ways to prevent and manage shin splints at the link!

Once a fungal infection is confirmed, it’s critical to keep the feet dry, clean, and away from sources of infection. This can be done by:
- Thoroughly drying your feet with a towel after showering or getting wet, including between the toes
- Wearing open or breathable shoes where possible to let the feet air and dry
- Disinfecting infected shoes, socks, towels, and bathmats to help prevent the spread of infection and reduce the risk of re-infection
To treat the infection directly, your podiatrist will recommend the right anti-fungal product for you to use.
Check out our next post for a comprehensive guide to conquering athlete’s foot 👣

What is tinea pedis? Or as it is more commonly known, athlete’s foot? 🦶
Athlete’s foot is a fungal skin infection that commonly occurs on the bottom of the feet or between the toes. It affects the outer layer of the skin and can be very itchy and uncomfortable.
Signs and symptoms of an athlete’s foot fungal infection can include:
- Red, scaly patches on the skin of your feet
- Your skin breaking down between the toes, which may cause cracks or fissures
- The appearance of peeling on the sole of the foot
- An unpleasant foot odour
- Itching, stinging or burning
- Toenails may also be involved, changing appearance with yellow or brown streaks
Stay tuned to our next post for how to treat tinea pedis!

You can get a blood blister when something pinches your skin without breaking the surface.
So, what’s the difference between a blister and a blood blister? With a blood blister, instead of clear fluid like a normal blister, blood floods the area under the skin from broken blood vessels and damage to the lower layers of your skin.
Some reasons why you may get a blood blister include having ill-fitting shoes that rub your skin, participating in a sport that has you on your feet for long periods of time or getting your hand or foot caught in a door jamb.

Did you know that poorly fitted shoes could affect your child’s foot development? Ensure your child’s comfort, gait, and posture by following these tips for choosing the correct footwear:
1. Length: Leave a thumb-width space from the child’s longest toe to the end of the shoe for growth.
2. Width: Ensure the shoe fits the child’s foot shape – too narrow might cause blisters, while too wide lacks support.
3. Depth: Avoid tightness across the top of the foot for comfort.
4. Heel: Ensure a snug fit without being overly tight or loose.
5. Ankle Support: The shoe should fit snugly around the ankle without excessive rubbing.
6. Walking: Observe your child walk in their new shoes to confirm a proper fit without slipping around the heel.
Seeking tips to prevent and treat blisters this summer? The Foot & Ankle Clinic has got you covered.
1. Choose appropriate footwear and socks.
2. Shield your skin - use petroleum jelly or adhesive tape on blister-prone areas.
3. Keep skin dry – moisture increases blister risk!
4. Break in new shoes gradually, especially for extended exercise
5. Consult a podiatrist if blisters persist. Your feet deserve expert care!
It's time to get new school shoes and choosing the correct ones can be difficult. Visit our stores and consult with our highly qualified podiatrists to be measured and fitted before purchasing.
KEEPING YOU ON YOUR FEET!
