Defying Rheumatoid Arthritis
An Australian girl who is intent on defying gravity, my diagnosis, and the odds - one day at a time, with a smile on my face!
I am a twenty-something (ok, thirty year-old) Aussie girl who juggles life, work, study, and the perils of living with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I don't have it all together, and I certainly don't have it all - but it's mostly good fun trying! Follow my tragedies, triumphs and all the other things that happen in between on my blog at http://defyinggravityandra.blogspot.com.au/
If Life With Chronic Pain Was a Musical "I think I may have figured out the secret to this whole chronic pain debacle."
Over the past few months I have been all but bed-bound with flaring and uncooperative joints - but to my great annoyance and frustration, my brain is still hyperactive and wanting to be useful. On my 34th birthday I was told I had one very clear solution. So after much deliberation, soul searching and a little pride swallowing, I too am saving for a wheelchair. Unfortunately I am too old for the NDIS and too young for public funding, in addition to not working (and therefore not earning) - but'll be worth it to be able to go back to work, go to the supermarket, go shopping, keep social engagements, and just get around. Purchasing and using a wheelchair is not a decision we make lightly - but instead I look at it as choosing being a functional person who has a life, which is a really easy choice! Thanks Arthritic Chick- the truth about life with Rheumatoid Arthritis for articulating everything I've been grappling with!

Rheumatoid Arthritis and my new wheelchair - Arthritic Chick This is the blog post I was never going to write. I never intended to write. Never imagined I would need to write. When I started this blog, from the very first post, I was imaging the post where I would declare myself in remission. And I knew that I would get there one day, …

When people get sick, their friends and family rally around them - flowers, gifts, and chocolates are sent, people visit... but when you're chronically ill, that simply doesn't happen.
Having been bed-bound for the past two weeks (and most of the month before that) it is abundantly clear that our world is suffering from a serious disconnect.
Now please don't mistake this for a woe-is-me, attention seeking post - instead, take a moment to check in on your people. Even if it's just a quick message or phone call, believe me when I say it will mean so much to someone who is struggling against the tide of their illness.
Treating to an arbitrary set of numbers and figures is not going to get the best outcomes - not to mention the fact that I need to work to maintain what little sanity I have left!

Defying Rheumatoid Arthritis: Trapped Chronic pain is not something I learned much about at uni - truth be told, I highly doubt a textbook or lecturer could have done it justice in a 200-seat theatre. There's something about the all-encompassing nature of chronic pain that really only lends itself to a practical learning experience.
Love my Mumma for knowing that pineapple is:
