At the very end of National Archaeology Week more than 20 people enjoyed the ASHA Tour of Waverley Cemetery on Sunday 26th May 2024. The white monuments and the Tasman Sea were sparkling on a glorious Sydney day.

As part of National Archaeology Week, archaeologists from the Inner West Sydney joined members of the public on Saturday 25 May 2024 with an exploratory display of artefacts, including those from the recent excavations in the Inner West Councilโs collections at the Marrickville Library, Patyegarang place, Marrickville.

Winner: Emeritus Professor J Vincent S Megaw AM, Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
Prize: Lifetime membership of the Society.
Vincent is currently attached to College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University where he has taught since 1979. His other appointments have included Visiting Professorship at the University of Edinburgh, Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow (from 1998 with his wife, Ruth) and the Chair of Archaeology and Head of Department at Leicester University. He has wide interests in art, music and archaeology (pre-contact and historical) and is considered a world expert in early Celtic Art. He has previously been editor or advisory editor of the journals, Archaeology and Anthropology, Mediterranean Archaeology and Antiquity. Flinders University now holds an annual Ruth and Vincent Megaw Lecture in Art and Archaeology.
He first published in Australia in 1965 on carbon dates from excavations in the Royal National Park, NSW but also has extensive publications on Iron Age Europe. He has published on Aboriginal and contact archaeology subjects in Australia in Oceania, Archaeology and Physical Anthropology in Oceania, and Mankind.

Historical Archaeology in the news.
Beneath netball courts in Melbourne's inner suburbs lies one of Victoria's most significant archaeological sites Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum was demolished and buried in the 1920s but archaeologists now believe more of it still exists beneath the surface than they previously thought.
The Sydney Historical Archaeological Practitioners Workshop was held on Friday 17 May, marking the the start of National Archaeology Week 2024. It was great to find out what Sydney archaeologists have been up to with presentations on a number of interesting projects.

ASHAโs second online seminar for 2024 will be presented in partnership with National Archaeology Week 2024. The seminar will be on Characterising Mine Wastes as Archaeological Landscapes, presented by Professor Susan Lawrence on Monday 20 May 2024.

Submission Guidelines:
- Abstracts should not exceed 300 words. Please specify the length of your paper (5, 15, or 20 minutes).

Whatโs on: UQ School Seminar - Heritage, capitalism, social relations, cemeteries, outreach and education: a personalised (historical) journey of Jon Prangnellโs career
Dear ASHA Members,
A Seminar Series is being held in-person and online at the University of Queensland on Wednesday April 24 to celebrate the research and career of Associate Professor Jon Prangnell, who is retiring at the end of 2024.
Jon has been a mentor to many historical archaeologists and in addition to his academic work, he served as ASHA's President between 2010 and 2013.

Please join us for our first school seminar of the year, which will delve into the career of Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the School of Social Sciences, Jon Prangnell. Jon is retiring at the end of the year and we thought a fitting way to start off our school seminar series was through a short and joyful retrospective of Jonโs research and teaching career.
Please come and gather for a morning tea at 10.40am (BYO coffee or tea), followed by the seminar from 11am-12pm.

The Inner West Council has opened booking for the ASHA/AACAI National Archaeology Week workshops on Saturday 25 May 2024
Curious to discover what archaeologists do, where they work and what they find? Join local Inner West archaeologists in an exploratory display of artefacts including those from the recent excavation of Fenwickโs building in Balmain and the old Marrickville Hospital site.
There is also the opportunity to handle and interrogate some of the artefacts and celebrate National Archaeology Week.
