The NSW budget’s winners and losers 04/10/2023

Budget Winners – will this help you ?

Tertiary students
A $121.9 million carrot over five years to boost the public health workforce will see new university healthcare students - that’s doctors, nurses, midwives and other health degrees - benefit from a $4000-a-year scholarship that they can apply for from January 1 next year. Those already undertaking study can apply for a one-off $8000 boost. But as with most things involving free money, there is a catch; upon graduation, students must commit to the public health system for at least five years. And it is not an immediate fix to the health system crisis, there is still more work for the state government to do.

Women
For the first time in a decade, women’s health centres across the state will have a funding boost, but at $34.3 million, it is well short of the pre-election promise of $100 million. The centres provide essential health, mental health and social support services. There has also been $52.7 million set aside for 48 new sexual assault nurse examiners and forensic staff and $18.6 million will help fund more breast care nurses with the McGrath Foundation; $7.3 million will support pharmacists to treat uncomplicated UTIs via antibiotic prescribing services, and the contraceptive pill can be accessed at pharmacies too, saving women on GP visits. And off the back of a stellar Matildas’ World Cup performance, the state government is investing in women’s sport, with $30 million to improve grassroots sporting facilities with a new program, Level the Playing Field Female Facilities Fund. It will provide grants of between $200,000 and $2 million.

The NSW budget’s winners and losers Teachers and students are the big winners, families and public transport users the losers.
